1. What would you like to tell your fellow citizens about yourself?
Name: Esther Montgomery
Age: 35
Family: Married, mother of four.
Occupation: Instructional Aide at Promontory School, Perry City Planning Commissioner
E-mail: esther.monty@gmail.com
To fully appreciate my qualifications, you have to go back to the time that I served in the United States Army Reserves. I quickly achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and have held many leadership positions therein. I served through a deployment, during Operation Iraqi Freedom, demonstrating determination, resilience, and perseverance in every arena I encountered. Thereafter, I took a few lively years to raise my young family, but, more recently, I’ve felt moved upon to get involved again. Currently I am serving on the Perry City Planning Commission, where I have served diligently over the last two years. I have viable experience working in the city. I am familiar with our Municipal Codes and have attended many City Council Meetings. I have demonstrated good judgment and decisiveness, and I am ready to engage in the discussions that pertain to this city. I’ve also served on the School Board at Promontory - working on different sub-committees, researching and collecting data, corresponding with outside sources and forming partnerships and agreements. That is my experience, and that is what I know I can bring to Perry City Council.
2. What would you like to change in your city?
“Preserve” and “improve” are the words I’d prefer to connect with my campaign. I strongly believe that the role of city government is not to restrict, but to provide necessary infrastructure, in order to empower its citizens. Perry City Government has seen its ups and down, but, as I see it, the individuals serving our city have been striving to fulfill those roles, and I’d like to be in the position to ensure that continues, in a fiscally responsible manner. UDOT and UTA will be paving the way for new growth and development. We can look forward to that, and, with it, the prospects of more commercial development. Encouraging businesses to take a chance on Perry is vitally important, but I want to be sure that the diversity and community that exist in Perry are preserved. There are things that need to be improved upon – the quality of our roads, street lighting, green community spaces, etc., but Perry is a great place to live and that should never change.
3. Why are you running?
I’m running for City Council because I was encouraged to do so. It was not originally part of my plan, but I know that it is fundamentally important for good people to be involved, and, having worked in the city, I feel I am in the right place to move forward. I am not a farmer, a business person, or a property owner. I have no self-serving interests of any kind. I just want to be a good steward for the community I’ve come to love, and am committed to see Perry, and its people, prosper.
