Even though it’s still technically winter, Harrisville is already planning to heat things up in the upcoming months. At the City Council meeting on February 11th, there was a reminder about the Great Utah ShakeOut which will be April 17th. This event will help get residents prepared in the event of an actual earthquake hitting the area. Different booths will be set up, including food storage and first-aid.

Also at that meeting, Recreational Director Bryan Fife and Jade Sewell of Ridgeline Design discussed the possibility of constructing a disc (Frisbee) golf course at Harrisville’s Main Park located at 1350 N. Hwy 89.  Like regular golf, disc golf involves going from one hole to the next in the least amount of “shots.” It can be played with a regular Frisbee or different discs specifically designed for different uses, such as a putter disc. According to Jade, disc golf is the fastest growing sport in the nation, with 12 courses in Utah already. Disc golf can be played year-round and could have many different benefits for the area including health, tourism, social and economic. There are still some bugs to be worked out, but the council members all sounded for it. Next up, they plan to get approval to use their RAMP grant to fund the project. If all goes well, construction on the course could be done in time for the Harrisville Heritage Days in August.

Fife also discussed the possibility of holding a baseball/softball tournament during Heritage Days. The tournament would open to 4-9th graders as well as having smaller activities for younger children, like running around bases the fastest or throwing a baseball the farthest.  There is still discussion going on about whether the tournament will be for only recreation teams or if comp. teams will be allowed. It will also be open to neighboring cities.

Finally, some members of the Youth City Council had the opportunity to go to the State Capitol building where they had the chance to sit through a mock debate and listen to a motivational speaker named Anthony Robles.  Mr. Robles was the 2010-11 NCAA individual wrestling champion, despite having been born with only one leg. All the members talked about how much they loved listening to Robles’s story because he talked a lot about overcoming trials and was very inspirational. They also enjoyed getting a glimpse into how debates work at the Capitol building.
