Put Your Nutcracker To Use

This Holiday Season

Snacking is as much a holiday tradition as turkey, tree lights, parties and shopping.

Those heaping plates of treats rarely provide healthy options, but few people complain – at least not until the New Year, when they realize they gained a few extra pounds

Actually, though, a healthy holiday alternative might have been there all along, just ignored because of the more enticing sugary treats surrounding it. Many snack trays include healthy nuts of various kinds (after all, this is the season of the nutcracker), but data shows that the typical American is more apt to reach for cookies, candy and chips. And it’s not just a seasonal thing: six out of 10 Americans don’t eat any nuts on a given day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nuts often play second fiddle to less nutritious snacks, despite studies going back to the 1990s linking them to positive health outcomes –  from lower cholesterol and blood pressure to reduced risk of cardiovascular problems.

Maybe this year, though, is the time to put that nutcracker to good use. Dr. Earl L. Mindell, an internationally-recognized expert on nutrition, vitamins and herbal remedies, says the holidays are prime time for people to gain an awareness of the health benefits of nuts.

“Many of us love pecan pie, especially during the holidays,” says Mindell, a spokesman for Primavera® brand walnuts (www.primaverawalnuts.com) and the author of 63 health-related books. “But eaten separately throughout the year, as is the case with almonds, chestnuts, walnuts and other tree nuts, they’ll significantly change your diet for the better. The nutritional values and different ways nuts protect your health are worth changing your snack habits.”

Mindell says the following four nuts offer many health plusses (and make great stocking stuffers to balance out all those marshmallow snowmen and candy canes):

  • Almonds. These are loaded with antioxidants – which have been found to help protect against inflammation, aging, heart disease and cancer – and vitamin E. Several studies have linked higher vitamin E intake with lower rates of heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. “Also, high amounts of magnesium in almonds can help lower blood sugar levels,” Dr. Mindell says. “Many people don’t get enough magnesium.”
  • Chestnuts. The Christmas Song begins, “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,” but many may forget about chestnuts once the holidays pass. If you’re worried about picking up an extra five or more pounds from Thanksgiving through January – as many Americans do – this could be your nut. “It’s low in fat,” Dr. Mindell says, “and a good source of magnesium, protein, vitamin E and dietary fiber, which you need for colon health. You need to look into keeping them around all year.”
  • Pecans. This is another nut high in antioxidants, fiber, and healthy fats, which help lower cholesterol. Of particular interest to men, the beta-sitosterol in pecans has been shown to be helpful to prostate health. “They’re also rich in several B-complex groups of vitamins, which help increase the rate of metabolism, so it could help in losing weight,” Dr. Mindell says.
  • Walnuts. These have the highest content of antioxidants of any nut. Walnuts are also a good source of heart-healthy polyunsaturated fats, including plant-based omega-3 fatty acids. Omega 3 oils have been shown to raise serotonin levels in the brain, so there’s a school of thought that consistent walnut consumption can ward off depression.” Walnuts are one of those treats you might only think about during the holidays, and that’s a shame,” Dr. Mindell says. “They’re full of amazing stuff.”

“We all should be eating more nuts,” Dr. Mindell says. “The research is all there, supporting how they reduce the risk of chronic diseases, provide many daily health benefits and can add longevity.”

Ride along with officers during the deer hunt

What: Tens of thousands of hunters — plus their families and friends — will head into Utah’s backcountry this weekend for the rifle deer hunt. DWR conservation officers will be there too, talking with hunters, checking their licenses and taking a look at the deer the hunters harvested. The rifle deer hunt is Utah’s most popular hunt.

Visit a DWR check station during the deer hunt

What: Sampling deer lymph nodes isn’t a pretty process, but it helps biologists check the state’s herds for chronic wasting disease. Biologists will staff check stations statewide throughout the opening weekend of the deer hunt. In addition to sampling for disease, they will assess the overall condition of harvested deer by looking at age, antlers, fat content and other indicators. These assessments provide valuable information about the condition of the deer herds as they head into winter.

Northeastern Utah

Young black-footed ferrets heading to Utah

What: More than a dozen black-footed ferrets will soon be on their way to Utah! Only a few decades ago, biologists thought black-footed ferrets were extinct. Now, thanks to successful breeding and release programs, there are ferret colonies throughout the West. The ferrets heading to Utah were born this year and will join a ferret population that already lives in the remote northeastern part of the state.

Surveying the sterile walleye population at Red Fleet Reservoir

What: Back in October 2015, DWR biologists removed all the fish from Red Fleet Reservoir. That drastic step was necessary because someone had illegally planted walleyes in Red Fleet. The walleyes had reproduced to the point that they threw the fishery out of balance and posed a threat to endangered fish that lived downstream in the Green River. In the years since that treatment, the biologists have repeatedly restocked the reservoir with sterile walleyes. These fish cannot reproduce and don’t pose the same threats that the fertile fish did. (To learn more about the DWR’s sterile walleye program, see https://wildlife.utah.gov/blog/2016/stocking-sterile-fish/.) Next week, for the first time, the biologists will survey the sterile walleye population in Red Fleet Reservoir. They will be checking survival rates, growth, diet and other key factors.

Netting invasive burbot at Flaming Gorge Reservoir

What: With a long, slithery body and unsightly face, the invasive eel-like burbot has all the appeal of a Halloween fright mask. Burbot have a huge appetite, which is why DWR biologists closely monitor their effects on fish populations at Flaming Gorge Reservoir. To check on the burbot population density—and to remove some from the reservoir—biologists will be netting them at the end of October. R

Central Utah

Introduction to fly fishing:  catching brown trout in the Provo River  (limited opportunity)

What: Expert fly anglers make fishing look easy — and really fun! But when you’re first getting started, it helps to have a knowledgeable instructor. The first week of November, DWR fisheries biologists will visit the Provo River and provide a brown trout fly-fishing tutorial you can share

Southern Utah

Visit a check station to see how Utah hunters are helping California condors

What: Hunters are voluntarily making changes to help the huge, endangered California condors that fly and feed in southern Utah. During the deer hunt, hunters can stop at check stations to show that they are using non-lead ammunition (or to turn in the remains of game harvested with lead bullets). At that point, they will be entered into a prize drawing for one of five rifles or $800 in outdoor merchandise. (Prizes were generously provided by The Peregrine Fund.)

The Stolen

Announce North American

Fall Tour

New Single "Stuck" Out Now

Old Bridge, NJ - October 17, 2018 - The boys of the pop-rock outfit, The Stolen, have announced they will be hitting the road this fall for a 28-day North American run, kicking off this Friday, October 19 in Richmond, VA, and wrapping up in their home state of New Jersey on Saturday, December 1. For a list of full dates, please see below or visit: https://www.thestolenmusic.com/.

On the tour, the band shares, "We're really excited to get back on the road and see some familiar faces, along with new ones as well. Touring is great for us because we're able to get in front of some of the most dedicated and passionate people we have ever come across. Without their support, what we do wouldn't be possible! We owe them so much and we're stoked to head out and see them!"

Before they honed their songwriting skills to craft inviting pop hooks and kinetic guitar melodies, the four New Jersey natives who make up The Stolen started off as a group of friends who explored their love of music through learning and performing AC/DC songs together, ripping covers of classic rock anthems and Motown tunes at their grade school talent shows.

Almost 10 years later in 2013, the band released their first EP, Adults, which they recorded with Jesse Cannon (Animal Collective, The Misfits), and for the release of their single "Chardonnay" in 2015, they worked with producer Paul Levitt (All Time Low, Have Mercy), and began the transition from their pop-punk beginnings to put more focus on their pop sensibilities. 2016 marked the arrival of their self-released, self-produced EP, I'm So Dead, and in 2017, the band released their most collaborative effort to-date, Fragile Heart.

Over the past few years, The Stolen has been recognized and heralded by notable tastemakers such as MTV and Alternative Press, have shared the stage with bands and artists such as Neon Trees, The All American Rejects, Jake Miller, and more, and have played Vans Warped Tour. The band's single "Overboard," released earlier this year, hit the No. 21 on the iTunes Alternative Chart, and perfectly illustrates where the band's sound is headed.

Tickets are now on sale for tour through various retailers. For more information, please visit https://www.thestolenmusic.com/.
