Celebrate National Caribbean-American Heritage Month
Start planning a party for the 2019 National Caribbean-American Heritage Month. Listen to the sounds of reggae, meringue, calypso, rumba and zouk music during the merrymaking. And dance. Sip a tropical concoction and feast on seafood.
Caribbean Heritage Month commemoration was adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2005 to recognize the significance of Caribbean people and their descendants in the history and culture of the United States. The resolution passed the Senate in 2006 and President George H.W. Bush issued the proclamation in 2006.
President Obama declared June 2011 as National Caribbean American Heritage Month, and recognized the integration of Caribbean nationals into the American society while still maintaining their cultural identity. Since the declaration, the White House has issued an annual proclamation recognizing June as Caribbean-American Heritage Month. President Trump proclaimed June 2018 as National Caribbean-American Heritage Month.
Caribbean immigrants have been contributing to the well-being of American society since its founding. Alexander Hamilton, the First Secretary of the Treasury was from the Caribbean island of Nevis. We count among our famous sons and daughters, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Cicely Tyson, W.E.B Dubois, James Weldon Johnson, Harry Belafonte and Sidney Poitier to name a few. The Institute of Caribbean Studies (ICS) effort began in 1999. www.icsdc.org.
The vision of ICS National Caribbean American Heritage Month (NCAHM) Program is to create a network of Caribbean American leaders driven by a passion to cultivate an enduring community. www.caribbeanamericanmonth.org.
The Mission of Caribbean American Heritage Month USA (CAHMUSA) is to promote the rich culture and heritage of the Caribbean American people and region to the people of America, in particular, and to the world in general. The Caribbean islands and region is probably best known as a vacation area with beautiful scenery, beaches and reefs. It is also known for its music, such as Reggae and Soca, and for Bob Marley, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and others, Olympic stars such as Usain Bolt, Sanya Richards-Ross and Kirani James, boxers such as Lennox Lewis and Trevor Berbick and its cuisine such as Jerk and Roti. www.cahmusa.com.
USA Celebrations
Have fun in the sun! “Large Caribbean American communities are in the New York Tri-State area, South and Central Florida, Atlanta (Georgia), Maryland, Washington D.C., Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Baltimore, Texas and California. Various estimates place this population as between 4 to 7 million people, including the first, second and third generations.” www.caribbeannationalweekly.com/. What and Where are the Caribbean Islands?
Time for a geography lesson. Ready your brain.
The Caribbean, which is located southeast of North America’s mainland, north of South America, and east of Central America, encompasses more than 700 islands, islets and cays, and the Caribbean Sea. The Caribbean islands are made up of sovereign states, overseas dependencies, and overseas departments.
The Caribbean Islands is a massive archipelago located in the Caribbean Sea, that can be subdivided into a few different regions: the Lucayan Archipelago, the Greater Antilles, the Lesser Antilles and the ABC Islands.
The Caribbean islands are made up of island groups including Greater Antilles, Lesser Antilles, Leeward Antilles, and the Windward Islands.
Greater Antilles includes the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico.
Lesser Antilles includes the U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Martin, Saba, Sint Eustatius, Saint Barthelemy, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, and Guadeloupe.
The Windward Islands include Dominica, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Turks and Caicos.
The Leeward Antilles include Aruba, Curacao, and Bonaire.
The month of June is recognized as National Caribbean Heritage Month, and is celebrated in major cities across the United States. Check with your local public library about diverse book authors.

Genevieve Wood got it right when she said hostile voices inside of Google attacked me personally, noting the attacks were not just about me. The attacks were aimed at attacking you, all conservatives and our stance on key issues.
They know that we favor policies that empower people as individuals, not groups. They know, we want people to be treated equally before the law, regardless of who they are. And we know Liberals often like to pick and choose which groups will benefit from rights, and decided which groups should have their rights taken away.
They also know, we want the law to protect American citizens, and prevent non-citizens from breaking the law. These are basic principles of fairness that we will not compromise on.
The nameless, faceless keyboard warriors called me a bigot because they disagree with my beliefs which took 69 years to form, and because those beliefs don’t happen to match theirs. The power to push people out who have a different view has become entirely too common, and I know you’ve experienced it, too.
Sadly, Google shut down an opportunity for the market place of ideas to build consensus. As conservatives, we must not advance the toxic practice of name calling and allow name calling to shut down opportunities to strengthen our nation. Our work is too important to let these things slow us down. Future generations cannot afford for us to quit and shut the door on civil discourse. Such actions fail our nation.
All the best,
Kay C. James
President

James,
Heritage President Kay Coles James, was slated to represent conservatives on an advisory council set up by Google to discuss the future of artificial intelligence. She would have brought valuable insights, but Google disbanded it. Why?
It was reported that hostile liberal employees pressured Google; they smeared Kay as an “outspoken bigot” who supports policies that “dehumanize and marginalize.” Google employees commented on an internal discussion thread that because she disagrees with them on immigration policies and LGBT issues, she is similar to an “avowed racist” or a “white supremacist”.
They aren’t calling Kay this because of who she is – an African-American woman who overcame segregation to become one of the most successful female conservatives in America. They are calling her these names because of what she believes and because she represents your voice and your concerns. If you disagree with them, they will try their best to shut you down. When they censor Kay, they censor us all.
You can show them that conservatives won’t be silenced. Your gift will make conservative voices heard, from the tech sector in California to the halls of Congress, Heritage will be your voice.
Help us spread the news and views liberals would shut down by clicking this secure link.
We won’t back down, but you have to be with us on this, or they won’t get the message.
Sincerely,
Genevieve Wood
