Announcing the Grand Marshals for the Freedom Festival:  Jerry and Ardith Barnett

Jerry Barnett was raised in Youngstown, Ohio, and moved to Utah to go to college where he met and married Ardith Burrell. He retired from Hill Air Force Base in 1981, and has been the “Garden Doctor,” owner of Jerry’s Nursery and Garden Center ever since. Jerry and Ardith have 6 children, 19 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. Jerry was a member of the first Farr West City Fourth of July Celebration committee in 1975. That first celebration started at 5am with Denis Petersen firing his black powder rifle from the back of Jerry’s truck as he drove throughout the town. Other events included a parade, milking contest with cows loaned out by Jerry and Dale Chugg, a pie eating contest, and a live fishing contest. We thank Jerry and Ardith for their part in starting our Freedom Festival tradition and for their continued participation in our community.

Farr West welcomes two new businesses: Rustic Elegance Weddings and Redleif Restoration. There have been many changes happening at Smith Family Park with the flag pole having been installed, the restroom exterior completed, and the landscape being worked on. Boyd commented the priority right now is secondary water and the sewer. Boyd also reported a change order needs to be approved for Marriott Construction for the pipe that will stretch from the Weber Basin Canal to the pond, and the rip-raft. With worry over the additional expenses for the Smith Park, the City council is wondering where the finances will come from with additional things that have come up that was not included in bids.

There has been much discussion over just what to do at Higley Road and 3300 North (North Plain City Road). It was approved to put in a four-way stop at Higley Road and 3300 South, and lower the speed limit on Higley Road and North Plain City Road to 30 MPH.

Report from Council on assignments.

·         Ken Phippen reported on an Active Transportation meeting.

·         David Jay reported the City has purchased “No Vehicle for Sale” signs.

·         Tom Burkland reported on the Drain Coalition meeting, and the Central Weber Sewer Board meeting.

·         Matt Gwynn reported Marriott Construction is in the process of digging a finger at the Smith Family Park pond, aerating the pond, a wind wheel for the pond, and he was applied for a $1,000 grant from DWR. Matt also reported on the Weber Fire District meeting.

·         Boyd Ferrin reported on the Rod Anderson property on Higley Road, and the business operating out of Anderson’s barn.
