O1ARTS - NEWSLETTER - SEP 2018 vol.1 – CONNECTING OVER 4,600 CREATIVES
We’re so excited to feature our very own #O1WALLS mural artist for this month’s Featured Creative column.
Jane Kim attributes her start to her love of nature and her curation of it. She says, “As a little girl. I was completely obsessed with bears. I collected over 300 bears. I drew them all over my bedroom walls and even made my own teddy bears. This obsession lasted for five or six years. The next was followed by lilies. Then horses, dogs, cats, fish, etc. With each love of nature came a creative expression. Sometimes I sculpted the subject. Sometimes I painted it. Sometimes I drew it. From a very early age, I made art about things that I love and since an early age, I loved the natural world. I now have a studio called Ink Dwell that creates art focused on art, wonder and the natural world.”
Back in January, I wrote about Art as a Vehicle for Social Commentary, and some of the exhibitions around town that had layers of messaging and content in addition to stuff that was interesting to look at.
More recently, I shared O1ARTS’ mission statement and a tagline. Today, I’m distilling it even further: #artwithpurpose .
You see, everything we’ve done, and are planning to do, has purpose beyond entertaining. Our O1|PLATFORMS initiative is designed to engage the surrounding community through active participation. We also offer our artists honoraria to make and exhibit work there, to help generate some economic activity, and to help break the cycle of make-first-get-paid-later-(maybe) that holds so many emerging creatives back. We encourage risk-taking and out-of-the-box thinking, and hope whatever a participating artist learns there (or through O1|PANES), will allow them to take the next step artistically.
Generating Vision and Visibility for Ogden’s Creative Community
Nine Rails Creative District to Move Forward with Full Support from City Council
August 20th – Ogden, Utah. The Nine Rails Creative District Master Plan was adopted in a unanimous vote during August 14th’s Special City Council Meeting. Proposed resolution 2018-10 was adopted to cover the area between Grant Avenue and Madison Avenue and between 24th Street and 26th Street.
The goal of Nine Rails Creative District is to develop an epicenter for art and culture that provides opportunities for the creative community to live, develop, share and teach their diverse skills for the benefit of Ogden’s artists, citizens, and visitors.
Have you noticed anything different about the Monarch building lately? Our own mural artist, Jane Kim, has begun the process of painting her over 2,000 square-foot mural on the side of our building. Her project, Migrating Murals, focuses on bringing attention to and paying homage to the beautiful Monarch Butterfly, whos migration pattern flows right through Ogden.
While other butterflies migrate not at all or very subtly, Monarch butterfly migration is a phenomenon that occurs each summer and autumn that some have called one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in the world. Western populations migrate through the Rocky Mountains to wintering sites in California. They arrive in November, then begin the trip back in March. Individual butterflies do not complete a round trip. Females lay their eggs for the next generation during the migration. Four generations complete the migration cycle.
The Banyan Collective’s Nine Rails Arts Podcast explores what it means to be an adventurous Creative in 2018. Through a partnership with O1 Arts, we will also get to know The Monarch, the epicenter of Ogden’s new Nine Rails Creative District and future home to artisans, designers, and creatives of all types.
In Episode 3, we podcast from the heart of the Jefferson Avenue Historic District during the 125thAnniversary Celebration of the Eccles Art Center. Ogden City Business Development Project Coordinator, Sara Meess, joins us for a behind-the-scenes look into the making of a Creative District. We also party on the porch with Shane Osguthorpe and Scott Rogers of the Nine Rails Arts Podcast house band, The Proper Way, and discuss the satisfying art of balancing a day job with one's artistic pursuits.
