BOX ELDER HIGH 2017-2018

BEELINE   HAPPY NEW YEAR!!   Have you heard the BUZZ…..

January 26, 2018

Parents and Guardians of Box Elder High Students,

Box Elder High School has been hit with tragedy this year several times.  The counseling department would like to offer some resources for parents about how to help a teen struggling with the grief process.  The links below are from reputable internet pages with relevant and accurate information about helping your teen grieve.

Things to remember: ● Grief is a process and takes time ● Self-care is critical during the grief process (eating, sleeping and moving) ● Teens need to talk, when they are ready, and process the feelings they are having.  Be a safe person for them to talk to. ● Talking with friends and peer support are an important part of the grieving process for teens.  These interactions need to be supervised closely by an adult.  Offer your home as a safe, well-supervised space for friends to gather.  Monitor social media use and interactions more closely as well. ● Impulsiveness can increase dramatically as teens grieve.  At-risk behaviors can increase. Supervise your child and their friends closely to protect them from impulsive and possibly dangerous activity. ● Assist your teen in supporting impacted survivors and family members appropriately. Help them to reach out to the grieving family in a meaningful way.  Teach your teen

about rituals such as viewings, funerals and home visits.  Teach them what to expect and appropriate behavior.  Always attend these gatherings with your teen and their friends.  ● Anger, Sadness, Humor, Shock, Disbelief are all normal parts of grieving ● Resuming daily routines is an important step when grieving

The goal of a Crisis Team is to assist students in the immediate present with shock and educate them about the process of grieving.    School counselors are available and will continue to be available as needed at their request or at the request of a parent, teacher or friend.  The best processing of grief takes place within the home with parents and loved ones.

As a school counseling team we are always willing to help!  Please contact us if you have questions or concerns.
