If you have been to the Dale Young Nature Park lately, you’ve probably noticed that old, diseased cottonwood trees have been cut down. City officials made the decision after public works employees reported that branches had been falling, and the trees had become a hazard. But where some people saw the loss of trees, one Perry City employee saw an opportunity to create art.  Three of the stumps have already been transformed into an owl, an eagle and a bear.  Adam Fiske has been working for the city’s public works department for over two years, and once he knew the trees were coming down he pitched the idea of utilizing the stumps as an art project to Perry Mayor Kevin Jeppsen. There was enough money in the budget to cut down 11 of those trees, said Fiske. Before we did that, though I had to seek approval from the Mayor, and I gave him a plan as to what we could do with those stumps if we left three or four feet above the ground. Fiske explained that the city didn’t have the budget to hire for removal of the root systems, which would have involved probable damage to the park’s sprinkler system, so instead he proposed leaving the stumps exposed, and using his self-taught skills with a chainsaw to carve the stumps into animals native to the area. “I mean, it’s a nature park, right?”  asked Fiske.  “So why not have little critters there?”  After seeing pictures of what Fiske proposed, Mayor Jeppsen agreed to the project, and the trees were cut down.  Fiske’s original plan was to have five or six of the animals carved before the Fourth of July, but as each carving takes approximately six hours to         complete, he’s running a little behind schedule.  Fiske said that he developed his chainsaw skills while working with his father’s construction company back east. “We were working in the woods with that kind of equipment, and I kind of dabbled in making some small animals out of large trees that were cut down.  This is the first time I’ve worked with a stump still in the ground” he said.  While carving the first two animals, Fiske said many local residents crowded around to watch him work, which he does in his spare time.  “They just rave about it,” he said, “and that makes it worthwhile.”  Fiske hasn’t named any of his carvings, but is fairly sure that local residents will take care of that.  The Dale Young Nature Park is located at 1200 West & 2250 South, and is open dawn to dusk every day.
