2017 CENSUS OF AGRICULTURE DATA RELEASED

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – April 11, 2019 – Today the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released the 2017 Census of Agriculture results sharing a wide-range of information about what agricultural products were raised in the United States in 2017, as well as where, how and by whom they were grown. The data, which is reported at the national, state and county level, will help farmers, ranchers, local officials, agribusiness and others make decisions for the future.  “The 2017 Census of Agriculture provides a wide range of demographic, economic, land, and crop and livestock production information as well as first-time or expanded data,” said Bill Meyer, Director, Mountain Regional Field Office. “Many of these data about the states in our Region and our counties are only collected and reported as part of the every-five-year census.”  “The Census shows new data that can be compared to previous censuses for insights into agricultural trends and changes down to the county level,” said NASS Administrator Hubert Hamer. “We are pleased to share first-time data on topics such as military status and on-farm decision making. To make it easier to delve into the data, we are pleased to make the results available in many online formats including a new data query interface, as well as traditional data tables.”

To provide easier access to the data, NASS created a number of online tools for people to find and use Census data, including:

 Census Data Query Tools – Use this application to query Census data from 1997 through 2017. Data are searchable by Census table and are downloadable as PDF files.  Quick Stats 2.0 – Query the 2017 Census of Agriculture database to retrieve customized tables with Census data at the national, state, and county levels.   Agricultural Atlas Maps – View profiles of the nation’s agriculture at the county-level in a series of multicolor pattern and dot maps.  Ag Census Highlights – A series of topical fact sheets about the characteristics, conditions and trends among U.S. farms and farmers.  2017 Census Volume 1 - State Level Data.  2017 Census of Agriculture Volume 1 Section 2 - County Level Data.

As well as the tools noted above, NASS will be address questions on Twitter (@USDA_NASS ) with a live “Ask the Census Experts” #StatChat on Friday, April 12 at 1 p.m. ET about the 2017 Census of Agriculture    The Census tells the story of American agriculture and is an important part of our history. First conducted in 1840 in conjunction with the decennial Census, the Census of Agriculture accounts for all U.S. farms and ranches and the people who operate them. After 1920, the Census happened every four to five years. By 1982, it was regularly conducted once every five years. Today, NASS sends questionnaires to nearly 3 million potential U.S. farms and ranches. Nearly 25 percent of those who responded did so online. Conducted since 1997 by USDA NASS – the federal statistical agency responsible for producing official data about U.S. agriculture – it remains the only source of comprehensive agricultural data for every state and county in the nation and is invaluable for planning the future.

NASS provides accurate, timely, and useful statistics in service to U.S. agriculture. We invite you to provide occasional feedback on our products and services. Sign up at http:/usda.mannlib.cornell.edu/subscriptions and look for "NASS Data User Community."

Local Impact: Special Olympics Utah Unified Sports®

Special Olympics Utah athlete Addie Morley and her mother Chelsea Miller traveled to Washington DC in February 2019 to share their story of Special Olympics with Utah’s congressional representatives.

Addie shared how she went from “being bullied in the bathroom in fourth grade to having friends greeting her in the hallways in high school.” She credits Special Olympics Unified Sports® where those with and without intellectual disabilities train and compete together for their high school for providing the way to make friends with her peers and have a positive high school experience.

As part of her sports experience, Addie and her Hillcrest High Unified Sports® soccer team were chosen to represent Utah at the Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle, July 2018 where they won a gold medal.

“We are so appreciative our Utah Congressional delegation would take time to hear our story of Unified Sports in high schools. We know Unified Sports helps students with intellectual disabilities develop connections and friendships with their peers. Our leaders deserve to hear these programs make a difference,” said Chelsea Miller.

“We thank Sen. Mitt Romney, Sen. Mike Lee, Rep. Rob Bishop, Rep. Chris Stewart, Rep. John Curtis, and Rep. Ben McAdams for hearing from us about Special Olympics Unified Sports in high schools.” expressed Addie and her mother.

Story has helped humans navigate danger since we first started talking to each other. Today we face perhaps the biggest threat of all as our planet warms and we need storytellers more than ever. Now is the time to make the conversation as urgent and immediate as the climate crisis itself. Two timely new books from emerging writers illuminate personal impacts of an abstract global emergency— Shaped by Snow: Defending the Future of Winter by Ayja Bounous and Confluence: Navigating the Personal & Political on Rivers of the New West by Zak Podmore.

You can help nonprofit publisher Torrey House Press publish these important and passionate writers by spreading the word and becoming a Kickstarter backer today. Early Praise for Confluence

“Zak Podmore has unleashed the kind of storytelling that will inspire the next great wave of ecological activism—and not a moment too soon.”
—AMY IRVINE, author of Desert Cabal

“The publication of Confluence marks the arrival of an important new voice in the West.”
—DAVID GESSNER, author of Ultimate Glory and All the Wild that Remains

“These essays combine an adventurer’s soul with a philosopher’s head. Kudos to Zak Podmore, a fresh new voice from the West.”
—PHILIP CONNORS, author of A Song for the River

“Finally! Finally a young writer who deeply feels and understands the power of water, the power of emotion, the power of words. Confluence is a profoundly personal and philosophical look at Western rivers and their value to all souls.”
—ANDY NETTELL, Back of Beyond Books

Early Praise for Shaped by Snow

“A love letter and an elegy to a time when innocence could exist before the era of climate change. . . written with a muscularity of experience by a woman whose character was formed on the ski slopes in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah.”
—TERRY TEMPEST WILLIAMS, author of The Hour of Land

“Those who love winter will love this book. But as we steadily erase the season that sets us free from friction, Shaped by Snow will appeal to anyone who has ever looked up and thrilled at the first flakes fat in the autumn sky.”
—BILL MCKIBBEN, author of The End of Nature

“Stunning and evocative . . . This book bears witness to the changing nature of Utah and the Wasatch Front, and is a call to all of us to pay more attention, to choose our actions with thought, and to live with love.”
—SYLVIA TORTI, author of Cages

“The best people grow in open air, Walt Whitman told us, eat and sleep with the earth. Ayja Bounous is that person: raised on snow, seasoned on rivers, bound by conscience, called to action. This Utah oracle reminds us what’s at stake, what we are fighting for.”
—MARK SUNDEEN, author of The Unsettlers

“Musings on powder, skiing, and the future of the Greatest Snow on Earth from a member of one of the Wasatch Range’s royal families that is sure to appeal to Utah skiers.”
—JIM STEENBURGH, author of Secrets of the Greatest Snow on Earth

STATEMENT on Senate vote confirming David Bernhardt to be Secretary of the Interior

DENVER—Today, the United States Senate confirmed President Trump’s pick for Interior Secretary, David Bernhardt. In response, the Center for Western Priorities released the following statement from Deputy Director Aaron Weiss:

“If this was the Department of Oil and Gas Drilling, David Bernhardt would be the perfect candidate for the job. But as Deputy Interior Secretary, Bernhardt proved over and over again that he will always put his former clients’ wishes ahead of the needs of America’s public lands.

“Bernhardt is already facing the prospect of federal investigations, and he’s on track to be under even more scrutiny than his predecessor, Ryan Zinke. Starting today, it’s vital that Congress carry out its oversight responsibilities to shine a bright light on Bernhardt’s past and future actions at the Interior Department.”
