Open letter to all Perry residents from Mayor Cronin:
“All the snow and precipitation we are receiving comes as a mixed blessing. We desperately need the water to replenish the aquafers and reservoirs.
Perry City’s main culinary (drinking) water source comes from wells which pump from the underground aquifer. Over the past few years, Perry City has experienced a dramatic decrease in the water amounts the wells are pumping per minute. One way this has been explained is that the aquifer we are pumping from is part of an aquifer system that goes from North Salt Lake to the Tremonton area. The combined aquifer system is like a Big Gulp in which, as development increases, is like putting more and more straws into the same Big Gulp with more and more people drinking from same Big Gulp. Because of the lower than average precipitation, this area has experienced over the past few years, the aquifer levels have been going down while the number of people drinking from the “Big Gulp straw” or pumping water out of the aquifer has been increasing.
The net effect has been the water levels were getting dangerously low in many places in the aquifer. The reservoirs where the secondary or irrigation water comes from were experiencing the same effect. Therefore, the water that will come from all the snow we are receiving will help to replenish the water supply to both our culinary and secondary water sources. On the flip side, with all the snow we are receiving comes the challenge of clearing the roads and sidewalks for safe travel. Perry City utilizes four snow plow drivers and trucks at a time to systematically go through the City during and after snowstorms to clear and sand the main arterial roads first, secondary roads next, and cul-de-sacs and side roads third.
I give a note of gratitude to the Perry City Public Works department for their service in working to clear the snow from the Perry City roads, especially spending long hours on Christmas Day and during the middle of the night on several occasions over the past few weeks. When vehicles, trailers, or other items are parked in the road it makes it much more difficult to clear the roads for the safe flow of traffic. That is why it is expressly stated in the Perry City ordinance that all vehicles must be removed from public roads during and 48 hours after a snowfall. Failure to abide by this ordinance may result in the vehicle being impounded at the owner’s expense. Also, it is counterproductive for homeowners to put snow from their driveways and sidewalks onto public roads. Please try to contain snow from your property on your property. The clearing of snow from sidewalks is also addressed by a Perry ordinance which states it is the landowner’s responsibility to clear the snow from sidewalks adjacent their property in order to provide for the safe access and passage of pedestrians. Perry City does not have the manpower or budget to clear snow from all the sidewalks or around the mailboxes within the City. This is defined by ordinance as a landowner’s responsibility. That being said, if you know someone in your neighborhood that may have health difficulties that make it hard for them to clear their sidewalks and around their mailboxes, it would be nice of others to offer neighborly kindness and go the extra mile to also clear their sidewalks and around their mailboxes. The abundant snow we are receiving now will be a great blessing in the water it will provide for the months and years to come. If we all take responsibility for keeping vehicles off the roads, clear the sidewalks adjacent to our property, and offer to help our neighbors do the same when needed, we will be able to increase the safety within our City for the last few weeks of winter (only 4 weeks until Spring officially starts) as we work together to continue to make Perry the Perfect Place to Call Home!” Mayor Karen Cronin

This is a very good class to learn how to prepare yourself, your family, your neighborhood, and your city in the event of an emergency.
