Forward Reviews explores the beauty and power in Edge of Morning: Native Voices Speak for the Bears Ears:

“Encompassing wisdom and grace, Edge of Morning is a finessed articulation of respect and the simplicity of being human.

Edge of Morning: Native Voices Speak for the Bears Ears, edited by Jacqueline Keeler of the Navajo and Yankton Dakota tribes, is a poignant and edifying collection of interviews, essays, and poems that details the efforts of an unprecedented intertribal alliance to protect the cultural resources of the Bears Ears region in southeastern Utah. The anthology also describes how Native peoples’ heritage and identity are inextricably linked to land and the fight to preserve their sacred spaces is a fundamental responsibility.”   Read on...

Dear Secretary Zinke..

May 30, 2017

|

Kirsten Johanna Allen

Utah's congressional delegation opposes national monuments, especially Bears Ears National Monument and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, and they successfully pressed the president to issue an executive order to that paves the way for rolling back protections for irreplaceable wonders.

The order places 27 national monuments under "review" by the Department of the Interior, which opened a 15-day public comment period on Bears Ears that closed May 26. Here's THP's Kirsten Allen's appeal to the Secretary of the Interior to preserve Bears Ears National Monument.

  Dear Secretary Zinke,
I am a sixth-generation Utahn and proud American, grateful for the national monuments and            parks in Utah and throughout our great country. Protecting national monuments preserves our          identity as Americans. Our national monuments and public lands and waters tell the patriotic story    of our historical, cultural, and natural heritage. Read on…

Submit Your Comment on National Monuments

The comment period on Bears Ears National Monument is over, but the deadline to comment on the other 26 monuments under “review” is July 10 so there’s still time to submit your comments to the Department of the Interior on why you want our national monuments to be preserved with their current boundaries and protections.

Comments may be submitted online at http://www.regulations.gov by entering “DOI-2017-0002” in the Search bar and clicking “Search,” or by mail to Monument Review, MS-1530, U.S. Department of the Interior, 1849 C Street NW, Washington, DC 20240. Tell Secretary Zinke that you want  to keep #MonumentsForAll

The Dispatch                                              May 2017

From the Engagement Desk

Dear friends of FMC,

In two weeks, Fostering Media Connections staff, friends and transition-age foster youth will set out to climb the 14,000-foot Mount Shasta during the 6th Annual Foster Youth Questival.

For the two of us writing this, it will be our first Questival. Neither of us have ever done anything like this, and we’re both intimidated and excited. We’ll be joined by hiking veterans like Daniel Heimpel, Kevin Clark and Christie Renick, who have been there almost every year since 2012.

We’ll be trekking with strong and resilient young people like Monique Guerra, Annissa Jimenez and our very own Shari Walker, who are equally stoked for this adventure. Questival gives foster care alumni a chance to push themselves and grow in new and beautiful ways. Hikes around Los Angeles this spring have helped us all get to know one another and prepare to take on Mt. Shasta as a team.

Questival is also a crucial fundraiser for FMC. It funds our Youth Voice Initiative, wherein we train current and former systems-involved youth in journalism and pay them for stories and op-eds that they contribute to The Chronicle of Social Change.

This program produces stories such as “Destination à Family” by Leilani Diaz, and “Finding Resilience in Broken Promises,” by Josh Elizondo.

This month, Lily Dorman Colby, a former foster youth who attended one of our journalism workshops in San Francisco last year, wrote an op-ed for The Chronicle of Social Change, titled “Want to Help California Foster Youth Succeed in School? Start with SB 233.” We partnered with The San Francisco Chronicle to get her op-ed published in their online and print editions, too. The bill that Colby wrote about – aimed improving educational outcomes for foster youth – is now moving through the California legislature.

To support the Questival and our Youth Voice Initiative, please make a donation on our Crowdrise page. You can donate directly to FMC or donate toward an individual’s fundraising goals. Every donation helps get our team to the top, and elevate the youth voice! Thank you so much for your support.

Look for our July Dispatch for a recap and photographs from the mountain!

Climb on,
Holden Slattery and Elizabeth Green
