Nervous Ninth Grader? 3 Steps to Lower Stress

The start of high school is an exciting time, full of new responsibilities for rising freshmen. It’s also a time when students can take steps to free themselves from stress in the new school year and throughout the high school year, says Elizabeth, who has helped hundreds of students get into the colleges of their dreams.

Many students flounder around getting their bearings freshman year when there are three simple things they can do now that will reduce their stress and prepare for success through high school, college and beyond, Elizabeth says. Set a path toward success with these steps:

1. Don’t get overscheduled: Don’t sign up for too many extracurricular activities; just the ones you genuinely care about that pique your interest.
2. Start thinking about creating your own project: Ask yourself, “What kind of impact do I want to make in the world around me?” It takes a while to see what kind of shape that is going to take. You can do that your freshman year and keep growing it.
3. Get a mentor: You can have all the good ideas in the world but it can be too daunting and you end up just doing what everyone else is doing. Partner with someone, probably different from your parents, to help guide you.

Elizabeth will explain how students can find a mentor. She also shares:

* Why many students stress, exhaust and overwhelm themselves trying to get perfect grades and test scores and do all the “right” activities, yet don’t get into the college of their choice.
* The secret to getting accepted into the college of your dreams (hint: It’s not about making perfect grades and test scores, adding “one more thing,” or doing more.)

“All your child needs to do is to take the ONE THING that lights them up and use this spark to make other people’s lives better,” Elizabeth tells parents. “When it comes time to write their college applications, all our kids have to do is tell this story — of how they’ve made a difference simply by pursuing what they love.”

Freshman year is a great time to start pursuing that passion. Contact me to speak with Elizabeth about how high school students can do this, AND reduce their stress levels.
