August 15 - Zika Virus

Monday, August 15, 2016 - 12:00pm

Zika virus has been a growing concern for local health officials long before it started to spread across America, and now that it has arrived, highly populated American Cities are scrambling to develop a plan-of-action to prevent the virus from spreading. As CNN reported earlier this week, cities have recently released ways they are combating the Zika Virus including:

  • Los Angeles, California: the county recently expanded its lab capabilities to ensure faster test results
  • New York City: is eliminating standing water that provides breeding grounds and applying pesticides to kill larvae and adults
  • New Orleans, Louisiana: The City's Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board will be getting an additional $500,000 to target the Yellow Fever and Asian tiger mosquitoes
  • Houston, Texas: has added an extra Saturday shift for trash pickup in neighborhoods with a large population of women of childbearing age and fewer residents that may have air conditioning (which mosquitoes tend to disdain)
