D/ISSUU

North Ogden Employee of the Month is Detective Paul Rhoades.  Paul Rhoades has worked for the North Ogden Police Department since August 1995. He is educated with a Bachelor’s degree from Weber State University. He is currently in charge of special functions in the department. This job includes grant writing, special functions, compiling reports regarding stats, department public information officer, as well as his detective job. He is very knowledgeable in the use of the computers and systems so that he can extract needed information in a timely and complete manner. He is thorough in everything that he does.

Paul has an accepting personality and is easy to work with. He is able to communicate well with the other agencies that are working toward the same goals and is always willing to assist others.

North Ogden Police is fortunate to have Detective Rhoades working for our department and appreciate all he does to further the goals of the department.

North Ogden City has been working toward the construction of a community pond to be located at approximately 2300 N 250 E. These are some of the items that were discussed at an open house last month.

This facility will play an important role for our City and will serve three main purposes.

1.   Detention Basin for North Ogden City – North Ogden City has an existing storm water basin located at 2500 N 200 E. The existing basin is in an area that could be sold as prime commercial real estate. The City plans to relocate the existing basin, which is not providing any sales tax or property tax to the City, to the new location and sell the existing location to a retail project developer. This would provide the City roughly 1.6 million in the sale of the property, $14,000 in annual property taxes and an estimated $198,000 in annual sales tax based on current projections.

2.  Recreational Facility/Pond – North Ogden City has applied for two grants (Federal – NCRS, and State – Utah Outdoor Recreation Grant) to help with the development of a recreational facility/community pond at this location. The pond is planned to have two distinct features: a deep area (irrigation) and shallow area (recreation) as well as a sandy beach area, restrooms, parking, pavilions and other park features.

3.  Irrigation Facility for Pineview Water (Weber-Box Elder Conservation District) – Pineview will partner with North Ogden City in paying for the construction and will utilize this facility for the storage of irrigation water used for the pressurized secondary water system most residents use to water their yards and gardens. Pineview is in need of a reservoir/storage facility and this project will meet those needs.

We are looking for community feedback on this project. There are other options also being considered: for example, a park that also doubles as a retention pond similar to Wadman Park. Please contact the City with your feedback – jcall@nogden.org.

North Ogden spotlights one outstanding North Ogden business each month. This month we feature Jumy Nails, which opened November 2001 and is owned by Jumy Nguyen. Jumy has lived in North Ogden for approximately 11 years, where she raised her three children, Tony, Julie and Steven.

Mayor’s Message

Last month we celebrated Pioneer Day, a day that commemorates the arrival of the pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley. Many of us in North Ogden have ancestors who were pioneers during that period of time. There are many stories of the hardships suffered during this westward movement. Conditions were brutal because of weather, disease, and the various forms of transportation that were available. Many lives of all ages were lost and buried along the trail.

I am privileged to have an ancestor who crossed the plains in a covered wagon at the age of 12. He, his mother, and one brother left Denmark and sailed to America. They were on the ocean for two months and two days. He witnessed 16 immigrants being buried at sea. They arrived in New York and went by ferry and rail to Omaha, Nebraska. They purchased a wagon and three head of oxen and began their journey to Utah. Two or three families rode in each wagon and when the oxen became tired they would take turns walking to lighten the load. They would travel 15 to 20 miles per day depending on the terrain. While walking, my grandfather would wear his shoes when the conditions were rocky and take them off when the soil was soft to make them last longer.

Upon arriving in Salt Lake City, they stayed one day and then traveled to Brigham City the next day. A year later they moved to Hyrum, Utah, and that is where my grandfather married and raised his family. The two room log home still stands today as a reminder of my pioneer heritage, of which I am proud and grateful for.

Let us never erase from our memory those who sacrificed so much that we may have a better life. We should be especially grateful for those who settled and established our great city of North Ogden.

-Brent Chugg, Mayor
