Layered Voices Exhibition

From Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc.

June 22 through Aug. 31, 2019

Magnificence in quilting is on view in the Brigham City Museum’s two exhibitions, International Art Quilts and Layered Voices from Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA) June 22 through Aug. 31. Admission is free.

The museum is located at 24 North 300 West. Hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. For additional information, visit www.brighamcitymuseum.org or phone 435-226-1439.

Quilts in the international show, curated by Museum Director Kaia Michaelis, are from South Africa, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Many of them have won awards in competitions sponsored by Quilt National, Road to California and American Quilter’s Society, Paducah. The pieces are primarily representational and traditional.

This is the first year a quilter from South Africa has been included in the museum’s exhibitions. Kathryn Harmer Fox, who lives on the eastern cape of the country, is a multi-media artist that prefers working with fiber. She says, “I use my sewing machine like you would an oversized pencil as a creative tool.” Fox continues “Africa’s wildlife has always moved me. Wild dogs, their coats daubed in umber, sienna and denim blue, are a painter’s dream.” She has incorporated wild dogs in her quilt “The Three Watchers” on display at the museum.

In Layered Voices, 23 textile artists have produced quilts with paints, dyes, bleaching, distressing, embellishments and stitches to achieve the desired light, shade, depth and color in their layered pieces. The quilters were stimulated creatively by layers found everywhere, specifically the rings in a tree stump, archeological digs to discover the history of civilizations, human anatomy and hidden meanings in short stories and poems. The pieces are mainly abstract.

SAQA is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt through education, exhibitions, professional development, documentation and publications. The organization was founded in 1989 by 50 artists and now has a worldwide membership of over 3,400.

Funds to support the exhibitions have been provided by Village Dry Goods and Box Elder County Tourism Tax Advisory Board.
