SALT LAKE CITY – (Jan. 2017) – Making 3-point shots this basketball season takes on even more meaning this year for the BYU and Westminster basketball teams. The Cougars and the Griffins will square off against teams across the nation to fight cancer as part of the American Cancer Society’s Coaches vs. Cancer 3-Point Challenge.

The Coaches vs. Cancer 3-Point Challenge allows the more than 200 college and high school basketball teams nationwide to use their spotlight on the court to raise money and awareness against cancer. Fans can pledge a donation for each 3-point shot BYU and Westminster makes during February to support American Cancer Society research, education and patient programs.

“Sports fans are passionate, and through initiatives like this one, we are channeling that passion into fun, yet meaningful, ways to help save lives from cancer,” said Sharon Byers, chief development and marketing officer, American Cancer Society. “With these schools and the many other sports partners who support our work, we’re revolutionizing how the American Cancer Society teams up with partners to make a real difference for real people every day.”

The 3-Point Challenge will pit teams against rival schools to raise the most funds, as fans follow the leaderboard on http://www.3pointchallenge.org to see who will become the 3-Point Challenge Champion.

“The 3-Point Challenge gives basketball fans the chance to support their teams and compete against their rivals, while fundraising for a great cause,” said David Doan, vice president for strategic sports alliances, American Cancer Society. “We are excited to relaunch a fundraising program that started it all, now in the digital space, while staying true to what drives sports fans – competition.”

More than 20 years ago, former University of Missouri head basketball coach Norm Stewart provided the vision and inspiration for Coaches vs. Cancer. A cancer survivor and National Association of Basketball Coaches member, he challenged fans to pledge a dollar amount for each 3-point shot his team made during the season. This 3-Point Attack concept evolved into the nationwide effort uniting coaches, fans, players, and communities in the fight against cancer, and is now known as, the 3-Point Challenge. New Radio Ads Stream in Arizona, Nevada, Alaska and Maine Slamming President-elect Donald Trump’s Appointment of Senator Jeff Sessions to Attorney General

The Ads, Paid for by UltraViolet Action, Say Senator Sessions Will Not Protect Women

Today, January 18, new ads paid for by UltraViolet Action will stream on radio stations in Arizona, Nevada, Alaska and Maine. The ads come on the heels of Sessions’ confirmation hearings, and urge Senator Dean Heller (R-NV), Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Senator John McCain (R-AZ), and Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) to vote against Sessions’ appointment as Attorney General, and call on Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) to rescind her approval of his appointment.

As a Senator, Sessions voted against bills that would protect women from domestic violence and sexual assault in the military, and voted against programs that support survivors of abuse. The ads reassert that “a man who couldn’t define sexual assault last October won’t protect us now.”

LISTEN TO THE RADIO ADS HERE: https://www.dropbox.com/s/5bzx5vm6gf5309k/20170111_UV_JSessions_3.wav?dl=0

In Augusta-Waterville, Maine: The ads will air on WVOM.
In Phoenix Arizona: The ads will air on KFYI and KTAR.
In Reno, Nevada: The ads will air on KBUL, KDOT, KKOH, and KRNO.
In Juneau, Alaska: The ads will air on KINY, KSUP, KINO, and KXXI.

“One in five women in the United States has been raped,” said Shaunna Thomas, Co-founder of UltraViolet.

“Senator Sessions’ nomination alone is a slap in the face to sexual assault survivors and all women nationwide. But the possibility that Jeff Sessions, a man who does not even know the definition of sexual assault, could be our Attorney General is nothing short of terrifying.

“With an ongoing epidemic of sexual assault and violence towards women - Sessions cannot be trusted to uphold the law and prioritize the wellbeing of survivors over rapists. That’s why we’re calling on Senators Heller, Flake, McCain, Collins and Murkowski to set a national standard and use their power to vote ‘no’ on Sessions’ appointment. It’s the least they can do.”

Last week, a group of sexual assault survivors joined by their supporters and members of UltraViolet confronted Senator Sessions’ at his Capitol Hill office over his long-standing anti-woman, anti-survivor record. At the action, the survivors of sexual assault and their allies delivered a giant poster to Session’s Senate Office with the Justice Department’s definition of sexual assault. The Justice Department defines sexual assault as: “any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient.”
