Residents came out in full support of Harrisville’s disc golf tournament on May 24. The event was sponsored by Infinite Discs and included a morning session for beginners, and an afternoon session for more advanced players. The tournament took place at the Harrisville City Park located at 1350 North Hwy 89. It was the perfect way for Harrisville to showcase its new disc golf course, which features nine holes (with nine more to be built in the following year) that are perfect for beginners or advanced players.

During the morning session, residents were split into different groups and had an instructor with them to help show them how to properly throw different discs as well as explaining the rules of disc golf. Like its name would suggest, disc golf involves throwing a disc into a hole/basket in the least amount of throws. Different discs include a putter, a mid-range, and a driver, all of which are designed to fly at different ranges. Each group started out at a different hole and went through the course once. Families and friends, young and old, all participated and had a lot of fun, despite the windy weather at the beginning. The volunteers from Infinite Discs did a great job explaining the rules and also had a great time, even if it meant having to retrieve a disc or two out of the water or a tree. Mayor Bruce Richins also stopped by to watch residents take advantage of the course.

After everyone had finished playing during the morning session, pizza was available afterwards as well as the chance to win some free prizes during a raffle. Prizes included discs, t-shirts, hats, bags and a disc catcher valued at $100.00. Following the raffle, the afternoon session started. These players also split into different groups and played through the course twice. A list of the winners is available at http://infinitediscs.com/harrisville-disc-golf-course-grand-opening/.

The course was designed with families in mind, which was evident from the turnout. Harrisville was able to pay for it using their RAMP Grant. Special thanks goes out to Jade Sewell of Ridgeline Design who helped designed the course, Recreational Director Bryan Fife, Infinite Discs and their volunteers, and Pier 49 Pizza for providing lunch.

It was a lot of fun watching everyone enjoy playing this new sport. The course is an impressive layout that covers all over the park. At each hole is a sign explaining how far it is to the hole/basket as well as which par it is. Needless to say, this course will be providing entertainment for residents and families all over for years to come. Make sure to check it out, especially if you’re looking for a new summer activity.
