LiVe Well Lanes Visited 8 Million Times Since Opening in Utah Grocery Stores

Partnership helping Utahns live healthier lives

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, USA, July 20, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ -- LiVe Well Lanes have exceeded 8 million visits in their first three months. LiVe Well Lanes are located at Associated Foods Stores retailers throughout Utah and contain healthy options for quick snacks.

The LiVe Well checkout lanes were created in January 2017 as a partnership between Intermountain Healthcare, Associated Food Stores, the Utah Department of Health and Utah’s local health departments. The lanes are in 43 Associated Food Stores locations, which includes Macey’s, Dan’s, Dick’s Market, and Fresh Market.

"The LiVe Well Lane allows you to choose a snack that offers a nutritional benefit," says Joy Musselman, a dietitian and clinical nutrition manager at Intermountain. "Items offered include fruits, vegetables, nuts, calcium-rich dairy, and whole grains — all foods we typically don't get enough of in our diets. Using the LiVe Well Lane, you can easily choose a snack that will help fulfill something that might be deficient in your diet."

The LiVe Well Lanes have one specific area among the checkout lines in the stores. Shoppers chose the LiVe Well Lanes 25 percent of the time. Healthy items sales have increased 49 percent during the first three months, which translated into about 60,000 healthy items sold.

"We're thrilled with the early results as we work together to make it easier for customers to find healthier choices for their families," says Neal Berube, CEO of Associated Food Stores and a member of Intermountain's Board of Trustees. "Associated Food Stores appreciates the opportunity to participate with Intermountain Healthcare in serving the community. As we take this journey we understand people are seeking better options in meeting their nutrition and fitness goals."

“These numbers reflect that both consumers and retailers benefit from the convenience of healthier options in checkout lanes,” says Jess Church, public health dietitian at Utah Department of Health. “We’re really proud of cross-sector partnerships like this one that make Utahns’ health a priority in our communities.”

The growth will likely continue as additional stores have the opportunity to initiate the program.

Intermountain Healthcare is a Utah-based, not-for-profit system of 22 hospitals, 185 clinics, a Medical Group with some 1,500 employed physicians, a health plans division called SelectHealth, and other health services. Helping people live the healthiest lives possible, Intermountain is widely recognized as a leader in clinical quality improvement and in efficient healthcare delivery.

The mission of the Utah Department of Health is to protect the public's health through preventing avoidable illness, injury, disability and premature death, assuring access to affordable, quality health care, and promoting healthy lifestyles.

BACKGROUND

In late April, President Trump issued an executive order instructing the Department of the Interior to review 27 national monuments protected over the last 21 years. Every indication from President Trump, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke and politicians close to them is that the outcome is preordained and review will lead to attempts to shrink or eliminate national monuments. Rolling back national monument protections through executive action is an unprecedented, and likely illegal, move that puts all of America’s protected lands, parks, forests and monuments at risk.

Two of Utah's national monuments are among the 27 monuments threatened under President Trump’s executive order.

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is described by the Utah Office of Tourism as a vast landscape of "of colorful sandstone cliffs soaring above narrow slot canyons, picturesque washes and seemingly endless slickrock." It is home to prehistoric village sites and features an extensive network of backcountry trails.

Bears Ears National Monument holds one of the highest densities of Native American archaeological rarities and cultural sites in the United States. It’s designation as a national monument was the result of a decades-long effort by local tribal nations to protect and recognize their historical lands.

The Center for Western Priorities’ Monuments to America tour is a six-state RV road-trip highlighting national monuments across the West that are threatened by President Trump’s executive order. The tour is wrapping up at the final Outdoor Retailer trade show in Salt Lake City. Outdoor Retailer is leaving Salt Lake City for Denver Colorado after 20 years in protest of Utah politicians’ anti-public lands agenda.

This spring, the Center for Western Priorities launched a multi-state ad campaign encouraging national leaders to respect the heritage and history of America’s national monuments.

Author Jacki Alsip introduces ‘Logan and the Dragonfly’

Logan’s imagination takes flight as it is sparked by stories his grandmother has planned for their weekend together

CALIPATRIA, Calif. – Feeling guilty for not spending enough time with her grandson because of distance, author Jacki Alsip compromised and spent time with him in her mind and ended up writing “Logan and the Dragonfly” (published by Archway Publishing).

Logan and his grandmother have a special bond with each other.  When they get together, his imagination goes into over-drive picturing the things she tells him about.  In “Logan and the Dragonfly,” he goes on a wild ride, with a creature only a little boy could think of.

“Adults, especially grandparents, will enjoy (my book) because it shows a bond between a grandparent and grandchild, as well as what older individuals can give to our young,” Alsip shares.

Follow Logan as his imagination takes him on an adventure only a little boy could have. “Logan and the Dragonfly” may establish conversations that could be the start of an adventure in a child’s mind.

“Today’s kids spend too much time on the computer or watching television,” Alsip adds. “I hope (my book) will cause children to think about the things they see every day and become curious.  I hope they take an interest in reading, learning and being with family.”

AASA Launches National Campaign to Support Public Schools

Alexandria, Va. – July 19, 2017 – On behalf of the 50 million students attending America’s public schools, AASA, The School Superintendents Association, announced the launch of its I Love Public Education campaign, an ongoing effort to highlight the success of public education and demonstrate why public schools continue to develop future generations of successful students.

“As the national organization for the school superintendents who lead our public schools, AASA is in the best position to lead the dialogue about our love—and the importance of this love—for public education,” said Daniel A. Domenech, AASA executive director. “Our I Love Public Education campaign is a direct extension of our commitment to ensuring all students have access to a high quality public education. At a time when education policy may be momentarily distracted from the rich history of our public schools and the roles they play in preparing students to be productive adults, who better than school system leaders to lead, shape and grow a broad dialogue and support for loving public education?”

Last week, hundreds of superintendents—America’s foremost thought leaders in public education—gathered in Washington, D.C. at AASA’s 2017 Legislative Advocacy Conference and discussed critical issues facing our schools. During the meeting, AASA’s Governing Board drafted, finalized and adopted the official resolution in support of the campaign.

“I am so proud to see the launch of this campaign coincide with my year as president of AASA. Now is the time to stand up and celebrate all that is great about public education,” said Gail Pletnick, superintendent, Dysart Unified School District in Surprise, Ariz., and the 2017-18 president of AASA. “The members of AASA are fearless in their willingness to lead the effort to drive improvements in public education and work on any areas of challenge identified. The public school systems we lead are dedicated to serving their communities and students, and deserve support and recognition. We enter this campaign backed by the passion of millions of educators who work for our students, who are our future.”

A key component of the campaign includes fostering conversations and strong actions to allow schools to provide the best support to students. Educators are encouraged to join the conversation on Twitter by using the #LovePublicEducation hashtag.

The campaign website, www.lovepubliceducation.org, includes details on how anyone associated with advocating for the strength of public education can get involved.
