Rep. Love Statement on Death of Otto Warmbier

“I am heartbroken at the death of Otto Warmbier, who after being held captive in North Korea for 17 months was released to his family in a vegetative state.  As a mother, I can’t imagine the pain his family must be experiencing right now, and I extend heartfelt condolences.”

“The United States should send a clear message that this horrid, inhumane treatment of Americans is unacceptable.  Americans need to know that this country will do whatever possible to bring our loved ones home. I shudder to think of what may be happening to the three Americans still held by North Korea’s murderous regime.”

“My own constituent, Josh Holt, has suffered in a Venezuelan jail for almost a year.  We must get him out.  Now is the time to vigorously pursue the unconditional release of Americans like Josh who are unjustly detained by repressive regimes.”

“Working with my colleagues on the House Subcommittee on Terrorism and Illicit Finance, I stand ready to hold accountable anyone who harms our citizens.”

EVERYBODY’S A LAWYER. Whenever there’s a step forward in achieving greater funding equity for charter students, somebody is bound to stand up and boldly declare it a violation of the state’s constitution. Say ‘hello” to Florida, where some are saying  that efforts to have more money follow the students are ripe for a constitutional challenge. But House Speaker Richard Corcoran’s comments on the subject seem more to the point. He says the long-term goal is to "empower all parents to have the purchasing power to decide" how and where to get their children a "world-class education." He also notes correctly that charters are public schools, too, although they operate under different rules and requirements.

BTW. When the “unconstitutional” card was played in the Kentucky debate over a strong charter law earlier this year, CER brought together a team of Constitutional law experts, led by former Solicitor General of the United States Paul Clement, to assess the matter. Their finding: Kentucky’s constitution did not in any way prohibit enactment of a strong charter school law,(i.e. one with multiple authorizers, equal funding and not under the control of traditional school districts).

LIKE WE’VE BEEN SAYING. Former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge has joined a growing chorus of charter advocates who are saying there’s no time like the present for action, and that there has never been a better opportunity nationally for advocates of student choice. “The political landscape is never going to be better,” Ridge said after he accepted a champion of choice award from the Pennsylvania Coalition of Public Charter Schools. Agreed!  (This is 20th anniversary of Pennsylvania’s charter school law – passed when Ridge was governor – which paved the way for the Keystone State’s 162 brick-and-mortar charters and 14 cyber-charter schools that now serve 1-in-14 public school students).

PLAYING HARDBALL IN THE BIG APPLE. New York’s Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan wants to lift the cap on the number of privately run public schools in the city, now set at 23 new charters. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio doesn’t agree and consequently risks having control of the city’s schools returned to the Board of Education for the first time in 15 years, which he really, really doesn’t want to see happen. “Mayor de Blasio is playing chicken with the futures of 48,000-plus students waiting for a shot at a better education through charter schools. Parents should be appalled,” said Brandon Muir of Reclaim New York. “It’s a no-brainer to lift the charter-school cap and extend mayoral control.” Advice to the mayor:  now seems like an excellent time to blink.

IN MY MIND I’M GOING TO CAROLINA. Worksite charter schools could become a reality  in North Carolina, where a law that would allow companies to host taxpayer-funded charter schools for their employees' children is under consideration. Three states already have worksite school provisions – Florida, Louisiana and Connecticut – but only one, Florida, has a worksite school. They’re an interesting option that could, eventually, catch on. Of course, detractors think them unworkable. "If you play this out, it's not that practical," suggests a leaned analyst. "Jumping into a car with your kid in the morning to go to a corporate campus where you have a charter school, I don't think is necessarily what most people want."  Hmmmm. Odd logic there.
