THIS WEEK: 222 Events and Activities in Utah to Raise Awareness About School Choice
Beehive State Parents Encouraged to Look Into Education Options for Children During National School Choice Week
Governor Gary Herbert Issues Proclamation Recognizing Jan. 21-27 as Utah School Choice Week

Salt Lake City – School Choice Week began in Utah and across America this Sunday, with the goal of raising awareness about the options that parents have for their children's education.

The Week will feature 222 events and activities across the Beehive State, including open house events at schools, school fairs, homeschool information sessions, and other celebrations. In addition, a rally is planned on Thursday, January 25 at the Utah State Capitol.

Nationwide, 32,240 events and activities are being organized to raise awareness during National School Choice Week (Jan. 21-27, 2018), and nearly 7 million Americans are expected to participate. It will be the largest series of education-related events and activities in U.S. history.

The Week brings attention to the different education environments that are available for Utah’s 905,000 children. For example, families in Utah can choose from traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online academies, and homeschooling. The state's public school open enrollment policy is one of the nation's broadest and most accommodatingThe state also offers a private school choice program and tuition-free, public online schooling.

Governor Gary Herbert issued an official proclamation recognizing Jan. 21-27 as Utah School Choice Week. In addition, the county of Duchesne and the city of Centerville have issued proclamations recognizing School Choice Week in their community.

“We are a school of choice and want to celebrate that we are an exceptional option for the families in our community to consider. Our school is like a family—everyone belongs and cares about each other. We do our very best to meet the individual needs of each student who walks through our doors and want to make sure we continually improve our efforts. We celebrate our autonomy to make the best decisions we can and allocate resources according to the specific needs of our students and staff,” said Sydney Young, director of Early Light Academy, a charter school serving 1,000 students in grades K to 9 in South Jordan, Utah.

Celebrated since 2011, National School Choice Week is an independent public awareness effort. The Week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and it is not related to any legislative advocacy campaign.

“Utah has been a national pioneer in expanding access to education options for children and families,” said Andrew Campanella, president of National School Choice Week. “National School Choice Week is a time to celebrate Utah’s incredible school choice success stories, and a time for parents to discover all of the K-12 educational opportunities available to children.”
