UTAH SENATE PRESIDENT STATEMENT ON UTAH’S CONGRESSIONAL VACANCY

SALT LAKE CITY - Today, Utah Senate President Wayne Niederhauser issued the following statement on the resignation of Jason Chaffetz:

"Jason Chaffetz was an integral member of Utah’s congressional delegation for over eight years. Now he returns to home and family. We thank him sincerely for his diligent service on behalf of the people of the State of Utah.

"There are many qualified citizens who may want to serve in this capacity and we wish each of them the best in the months to follow.  We trust Utahns to have the wisdom and ability to recognize leaders with integrity who share their values, elect them, and hold them accountable.

"We remind the executive branch that the times, places and manner of our elections are clearly a legislative responsibility, defined in Article 1, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution.  The path forward with the least amount of legal risk would be for the governor to call a special session to allow lawmakers to add appropriate election language to the state code."
