OCTOBER- DECEMBER 2017 QUARTERLY MILK PRODUCTION  MOUNTAIN REGION HIGHLIGHTS 

 

Arizona dairy herds produced 1.18 billion pounds of milk during the October - December quarter, up 2.3 percent from the previous year.  

 

Colorado dairy herds produced 1.07 billion pounds of milk during the October - December quarter, up 7.5 percent from the previous year.  

 

Montana dairy herds produced 71.0 million pounds of milk during the October - December quarter, down 1.4 percent from the previous year. 

 

New Mexico dairy herds produced 2.00 billion pounds of milk during the October - December quarter, up 2.2 percent from the previous year.  

 

Utah dairy herds produced 559.0 million pounds of milk during the October - December quarter, up 5.9 percent from the previous year.  

 

Wyoming dairy herds produced 33.9 million pounds of milk during the October - December quarter, down 5.0 percent from the previous year.  UNITED STATES HIGHLIGHTS 

 

Nationally, U.S. milk production during the October - December quarter totaled 53.1 billion pounds, up 1.1 percent from the October - December quarter last year.

2018 Darwin Day Celebration in Salt Lake City

 

Salt Lake City (January 24, 2018) — Renowned paleontologist Dr. Randall Irmis will highlight the 2018 Darwin Day Celebration with a free talk on “The Rise of Dinosaurs: Evolutionary Success Through Competition or Luck?”  

 

This annual event will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018 from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. in the Department of Natural Resources Auditorium, located at 1594 W. North Temple in Salt Lake City.

 

Dr. Irmis will talk about the dawn of the age of dinosaurs and how and why they came to dominate the planet. Considered one of the foremost authorities on the origins of dinosaurs, he has worked around the world studying early dinosaurs and has published major articles in prominent journals such as Nature and Science

 

Dr. Irmis is the Chief Curator at the Natural History Museum of Utah and an Associate Professor in the Department of Geology & Geophysics at the University of Utah.

 

The event is free and open to the public. It will begin at 2:00 p.m. with food and information tables from the Utah Friends of Paleontology, the Humanists of Utah, the Bureau of Land Management, and others. Dr. James Kirkland, Utah State Paleontologist, will lead tours of the Utah Geological Survey paleontology preparation lab and be available to identify visitor’s fossils. The keynote lecture begins at 4:30 p.m. The event will conclude with the cutting of Darwin’s Birthday Cake for all to share.

 

 

Celebrated on or near the birthday of Charles Darwin with events held around the world, Darwin Day promotes public education about science and encourages the celebration of science and humanity. The Humanists of Utah have sponsored a Darwin Day event in Salt Lake City each year since 2008.
