• Children's books

The world is diverse, but children’s literature doesn’t always reflect that, especially in the sci-fi/fantasy genre. Ebony Elizabeth Thomas, a professor in the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, advises children’s book authors to be deliberate and inclusive in portraying major characters and secondary characters alike. “It’s not just kids of color, kids from the margins, who need diverse literature and media,” she says. “It’s all kids who need all stories about all kinds of people” because what children read shapes what they think of themselves, of others, and of the world.

• Risk tolerance

How much you are willing to risk has many effects across day-to-day life. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found that brain structure influences a person’s decision-making tendencies. Connections between two areas of the brain—the amygdala and prefrontal cortex—have implications for everything from junk food consumption to the experience of mood disorders such as anxiety. “If you can characterize patterns of risk tolerance and the associated structural and functional neural markers, we could identify individuals who are most susceptible to these conditions and target preventive efforts accordingly,” said researcher Caryn Lerman.

• Dementia care

Transitioning between levels of care is common among older adults with chronic conditions. Yet research in this area has focused on the
cognitively intact, neglecting those living with dementia. Clinicians, as a result, lack evidence-based processes to facilitate smooth transitions of care. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing sought to remedy the issue by uncovering five essential recommendations
in the literature. The key is coordinated and responsive care, tailored to the individual and family’s needs.

Raleigh, NC - April 23, 2018 - Rock band Big Something has shared the official lineup for their 7th Annual The Big What? Festival, taking place August 16th-18th, 2018 at Shakori Hills Community Arts Center in Pittsboro, NC. The band is thrilled to welcome friends old and new, including Sunsquabi, TAUK, Cory Wong of Vulfpeck, Consider The Source, Funk You, Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers, Dr. Bacon, Becca Stevens, and more, plus secret late night sets by mystery artists. For the full line up and additional information, please visit:  www.thebigwhat.com.

On this year's festival, the band shares: "We are really excited about The Big What? this year. Big Something will perform more sets than ever before and we're already working on some great new material and surprises to debut at the festival. We really love getting creative with our fans and turning the festival in to one big art project. This year we hope to take that creativity to a new level."

Last week Big Something released their 5th studio album, The Otherside, which premiered in full on Relix and has recently been featured on Jambase, Live For Live Music, Glide Magazine, and more. The Otherside is a follow up to 2017's Tumbleweed, the band's most critically acclaimed release to date. Big Something will celebrate the release with a 2 night performance at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater in Wilmington, NC during their event The Big What? Wilmington on April 27 & 28

A 6 piece powerhouse with a sound that is both unique and timeless, Big Something fuses elements of rock, pop, funk, and improvisation to take listeners on a journey through a myriad of musical styles. It's no secret why this group has quickly become one of the most exciting new bands to emerge from the Southeast. Soaring guitars, E.W.I. (electronic wind instrument), synths, horns and alluring vocal hooks rise to the top of their infectious collection of songs and represent a sound that has caught the ears of such revered stalwarts as Umphrey's McGee, Moon Taxi, Galactic, moe., Robert Randolph, and even The B52s, who have all tapped Big Something as direct support.

The Otherside was recorded at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC with the help of Grammy-nominated producer and Carolina Music Awards Lifetime Achievement recipient - John Custer (Corrosion of Conformity) who has produced all 5 of the bands albums.

On The Otherside, Big Something continues to build upon the post-apocalyptic peyote trip imagery from Tumbleweed, concluding the story of a nomad who has made it to the other side of his journey wandering through the night towards a desert sunrise. The album also showcases a different musical side of the band with a heavier, more focused and soulful collection of 8 songs including "Smoke Signal" - a track that was written for the studio and has never been performed live.

The project is dedicated to the memory of the bands late lyricist and friend Paul Interdonato who tragically passed away on Dec 3, 2017 - the same day the band was setting up in the studio to record. Now each song carries a certain weight as the album features several of the last lyrical compositions that Paul ever wrote for Big Something. It is a thoughtful and poignant musical journey paying tribute to a lifelong friend with a brilliant imagination.

Big Something is Nick MacDaniels (vocals, guitar), Casey Cranford (sax, EWI), Jesse Hensley (lead guitar), Ben Vinograd (drums), Doug Marshall (bass), Josh Kagel (keys, trumpet), and Rhett Huffman (keys).
