Hatch: Justice Scalia Made Our Liberties More Secure

Washington, D.C.—As Congress returned to Washington this week, lawmakers paid tribute to the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who passed away on February 13th. Senator Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, a former Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a personal friend of Justice Scalia, addressed the Senate to commemorate the Justice’s life and impact on the law.

“Rather than re-interpreting the law in his own image, a good judge conforms his decisions to the fixed meaning of the law,” Hatch said. "By insisting that even judges must be the servants rather than the masters of the law, Justice Scalia followed the lead of America’s founders and empowered the American people. For that, the nation should be deeply grateful.”

A senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Hatch strongly supported Justice Scalia’s confirmation, and has played a major role in each of the past 15 Supreme Court confirmation processes.
