New Vikings Exhibit at the Natural History

Museum of Utah Goes Beyond the Legend of the Early Norse People

SALT LAKE CITY, May 25, 2017 – Mysterious seafarers, farmers, traders and plunderers who explored Europe more than 1,000 years ago – this is the legend of the Viking. Embark on a journey back in time to look beyond the Viking myth and discover the adventurous and ingenious lives of the ancient Scandinavian people through a new immersive exhibit. Vikings will open May 27, 2017 at the Natural History Museum of Utah at the Rio Tinto Center, 301 Wakara Way, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Ever wonder what kind of bread Vikings ate? The exhibit features an actual piece of 1,000-year-old Viking bread as well as hair from a real Viking beard. Guests will discover these artifacts and over 500 more, some never seen outside Scandinavia, including jewelry, funeral urns, weapons, game pieces, clothing and more. The exhibit also features interactive displays that allow guests to experience the daily life of the Norse people and better understand their traditions and influence.

When visiting Vikings, guests will:

  • Imagine a Viking voyage and explore a full-scale replica of a Viking ship
  • Step into the mind of a Viking and play a digital version of a popular Viking strategy game that pre-dates chess
  • Test the balance between the blade and handle of a replica Viking sword
  • Excavate a spectacular Viking burial boat, layer by layer, on an interactive touch table

“The exhibit debunks myths about Vikings being uncivilized pillagers wearing horned helmets,” said Executive Director Sarah George. “Visitors will get an in-depth look into the culture, traditions and beliefs held by the ancient Scandinavian people. We are thrilled to have this beautiful and insightful exhibit at the Museum and encourage our community, especially those with Scandinavian heritage, to explore the exhibit in the months to come.”

Special events and workshops related to the exhibit will be featured at the Natural History Museum of Utah through January 1, 2018. The Museum also features 10 permanent galleries for discovery including Past Worlds, Great Salt Lake, Native Voices, Land and much more. Entrance into Vikings is included in the Museum’s price of general admission.

For additional information, visit https://nhmu.utah.edu/vikings or call 801.581.4303.

Vikings was made possible through the joint efforts of The Swedish History Museum in Sweden and MuseumsPartner in Austria. Also by the exhibit’s Presenting Sponsor, George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation and Exhibit Sponsor, Emma Eccles Jones Foundation.

High and Low Festival comes from the mind of Andy Serrao, producer of many successful Southern California festivals and owner of Chain Reaction. A reflection of both Serrao's personal listening tastes and the very nature of music, he says the festival's name has multiple meanings. "Sonically, music has highs and lows, and emotional highs and lows, and with the California topography, we have the mountains, the desert and the ocean," says Serrao. "The name High & Low fit for us, with the vision for where we wanted to go. Great music has got me through every aspect of my life. With every high and every low, came a soundtrack in my head that defined my life. This festival is a good representation of artists that do this for myself, and tons of other people."

Reminder to Parents, Employers About Summer Jobs
NFIB issues five-point checklist for youth employment

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 26, 2017—The representative association for the people most likely to offer summer jobs to the young issued a short checklist, today, to parents and employers to help keep things legal.

The National Federation of Independent Business, America’s voice of small business, with 325,000 dues-paying members, including more than 3,700 in Utah, recommended employers and parents take stock of the following:

  • The rules apply to them. Just because they’re in school doesn’t mean employers can take advantage of them. Minors are entitled to the same minimum wage, overtime, and safety and health protections as adults. When it comes to work, the federal wage and hour law, officially known as the Fair Labor Standards Act, or FLSA, applies to everyone, regardless of age. Other federal and state workplace laws apply to them, too.
  • Students 13 and younger have limited options when it comes to summer jobs. Federal law says they’re too young for most non-farming jobs, such as working in a store or restaurant, but there are still jobs they can do. They’re allowed to babysit and perform minor chores around a private home, and if you own a business, they’re allowed to work for you.
  • If they’re 14 or 15, their prospects are better. Students in this age bracket are allowed to perform jobs such as bagging groceries, waiting tables and working in an office, but they can’t use power-driven machinery, such as lawn mowers, lawn trimmers, and weed cutters. They also aren’t allowed to work more than 40 hours a week, or 8 hours in one day.
  • If they’re 16 or 17, they’re allowed to work up a sweat and earn serious money. There’s no limit to the number of hours 16- and 17-year-olds can work, and they’re allowed to work basically any job that isn’t declared hazardous, provided all other FLSA and state labor requirements are met.
  • If they’re 18 or older, legally, they’re adults. It doesn’t matter that they’re still in school. In the eyes of the law, they’re grown up, and that means they can do pretty much any job for which they’re qualified.
