FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Eight Finalists Vie For Top Honors and $1,000
in Shakespeare Oxford Fellowship

‘Who Wrote Shakespeare?’ Video Contest

NATIONAL – Eight finalists are hoping to receive top honors and a $1,000 prize in the third annual Shakespeare Oxford Fellowship "Who Wrote Shakespeare?" Video Contest. Entry to the contest was open to contestants from across the US, and five different countries, including United Kingdom, Canada (excluding Quebec), Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Second place receives $500, and third place receives $250 in prize money.

The top three winners will be selected by open public voting, now available through Oct. 10, by visiting https://shakespeareoxfordfellowship.org/2019-video-contest, where everyone can view the eight finalist videos and vote for their favorite.

Did a glover’s son from Stratford really write the plays and poems of “William Shakespeare?" Or was the name a pseudonym designed to mask the real author’s identity? Doubts have persisted for centuries, with Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, Sigmund Freud, Sir Derek Jacobi, Charlie Chaplin, and five U.S. Supreme Court justices among the skeptics.

In the “Who Wrote Shakespeare?” video contest, contestants were asked to give their “take” on the controversial Shakespeare Authorship Question in a 3-minute video. The deadline for submissions was July 31. Judges have selected the top eight videos for consideration.

"Contestants were encouraged to create a three-minute video promoting discussion of the question, 'Who Wrote Shakespeare?' in a format that is entertaining, engaging, and witty,” said contest coordinator Tom Regnier.

Despite hundreds of years of searching, no evidence has ever been found to prove the Stratford man attributed with the works ever went to school, wrote a letter, or owned a book. Yet the works of Shakespeare show evidence that the author (whoever he was) was deeply familiar with law, medicine, astronomy, philosophy, mythology, gardening, precious stones, music, Italy, and many other subjects.

"The Video Contest always arouses special interest in the Shakespeare Authorship Question. We get enthusiastic responses from all over the world," Regnier said.

Considering that the Elizabethan Age was a golden age of pseudonyms, could Shakespeare have been the pen name of a reclusive genius who felt the need to hide his identity?

This question has also fascinated members of the Shakespeare Oxford Fellowship, a nonprofit organization forged more than 60 years ago, dedicated to sponsoring research of the Shakespeare Authorship Question, and favoring Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, as the most likely candidate for the authorship laurels.

“Though our members predominantly favor Edward de Vere, we are always open to discussion of other candidates in order to get to the truth,” said Regnier.

SOF publishes quarterly newsletters and two annual journals on research and developments of the Shakespeare Authorship Question. The organization also sponsors a $20,000 annual Research Grant Project, regional events dedicated to the SAQ, and an annual conference in a different major US city each year. This year’s conference will be held Oct. 17-20, at the Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford, CT, where winners of the annual “Who Wrote Shakespeare?” Video Contest will also be announced Oct. 20.

Finalists and winning video entries from the previous two years, as well as complete rules and details are also available at the SOF website: https://shakespeareoxfordfellowship.org/sof-video-contest

Sutherland Institute announces Rep. Curtis in 2019 Congressional Series

SALT LAKE CITY—Today Sutherland Institute announced Rep. John Curtis will address Religious Liberty for All in its 2019 Congressional Series, presented by Zions Bank. The event will be held on Friday, Aug. 23.

“We face a unique challenge of balancing needed protections for the LGBTQ community with the importance of protecting religious liberty – one of the fundamental rights enshrined at the founding of our nation,” Curtis said.

“Our Founders addressed the free exercise of faith, not as a requirement of government, but as a founding virtue that creates a necessary sense of purpose and shared accountability to a higher power,” said Rick B. Larsen, Sutherland Institute president. “Freedom thrives with such a united and humble perspective. Without it, we are left to every version of tribalism, nationalism and identity politics. It is with this perspective we welcome Rep. Curtis and his thoughts on this critical subject.”

This is a private event, but it is open to the public with advance ticket registration and will be streamed live on Sutherland’s Facebook page. It is also open to media who RSVP in advance to kelsey@sifreedom.org. Space is limited.

Following Curtis’s remarks, a panel will discuss how religious liberty intersects with the lives of America’s minorities. Panelists include: Mary Rice Hasson, the Kate O’Beirne Fellow in Catholic Studies at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, D.C.; Avais Ahmed, an experienced e-commerce business owner; The Rev. Marian Edmonds-Allen, a Justice Ministry Education Supervisor for Auburn Seminary and co-founder of the LGBTQ Youth Continuum of Care; and William C. Duncan, Sutherland's Religious Liberty Scholar and director of the Marriage Law Foundation.

Press Release

USDA Details Trade Damage Estimate Calculations

(Washington, D.C., August 23, 2019) – U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Office of the Chief Economist has published a detailed accounting of how estimated damage from trade disruptions was calculated for its support package for farmers announced on July 25, 2019. USDA’s Office of the Chief Economist developed an estimate of gross trade damages for commodities with assessed retaliatory tariffs by China, India, the European Union, and Turkey to set commodity payment rates and purchase levels. USDA employed the same approach often used in adjudicating World Trade Organization trade dispute cases.

“Just as we did before, we want to be transparent about this process and how our economists arrived at the numbers they did. Our farmers and ranchers work hard to feed the United States and the world, and they need to know USDA was thorough, methodical, and as accurate as possible in making these estimates. We listened to feedback from farmers on last year’s programs and incorporated many of those suggestions into today’s programs. While no formula can be perfect in addressing concerns from all commodities, we did everything we could to accommodate everyone,” Secretary Perdue said. “For a long time, China and other nations have not provided free, fair, and reciprocal access to U.S. farmers and ranchers and President Trump is the first President to stand up to them and send a clear message that the United States will no longer tolerate unfair trade practices. Our support package ensures farmers will not stand alone in facing unjustified retaliatory tariffs while President Trump continues working to solidify better and stronger trade deals around the globe.”

The full description of the Trade Damage Estimation for the Market Facilitation Program and Food Purchase and Distribution Program is available on the website of USDA’s Office of the Chief Economist (PDF, 429 KB).
