Fall in Love fee-waived pet adoption event

Humane Society of Utah waives adoption fees for all animals Black Friday through Cyber Monday

To encourage adoption and find homes for hundreds of Utah’s homeless pets, the Humane Society of Utah (HSU) announced its Fall in Love fee-waived pet adoption event beginning Black Friday, Nov. 24, and continuing through Cyber Monday, Nov. 27 at its adoption center located at 4242 S 300 W in Murray, Utah. Adoption fees will be waived for all animals pending approval through the regular adoption process.

“Our goal is to find homes for as many pets as possible this holiday season,” said Deann Shepherd, HSU representative. “During one of the busiest shopping times of the year, we like to say that you can’t buy love, but you can adopt it.”

Interested adopters should visit the Humane Society of Utah adoption center during regular business hours. During the Fall in Love event, animals will be adopted on a first come, first served basis and will not be put on hold for any reason. Bring family members down to meet a new pet, and note that regular adoption policies still apply. If an adoption is not in the best interest of the animal, the adoption may be denied. “We trust our adoption process to screen all potential adopters to ensure that our animals find the best homes possible,” said Shepherd.

Studies in animal welfare have found that eliminating adoption fees does not devalue the animals in the eyes of the adopters. There is no statistical difference in post-adoption veterinary care or retention by owners for pets acquired by fee-waived and non fee-waived means. Successful adoptions do not require payment of a fee, and free adoption promotions may increase adoptions without compromising the quality of the animal’s life.

Adoption fees do not cover the cost of care for shelter animals, and as a local private nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, HSU appreciates donations of any kind. To adopt an animal this holiday season, visit the Humane Society of Utah or www.utahhumane.org.

Big March on Main Street, Tomorrow
Will this Small Business Saturday top last year’s record awareness, participation?

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Nov. 24, 2017—Will tomorrow’s march on Main Street be bigger than last year’s? The representative association for Utah’s small-business owners is hoping so.

Started in 2010 by American Express as a spur out of the recession, this will be the 8th Small Business Saturday, and while awareness of the special day has beat each previous year’s percentage, total spending at Main Street shops dipped to $15.4 billion in 2016, down from the record $16.2 billion set in 2015.

“I’m calling on all Utahns to get out from behind their computers, tomorrow, suspend their online shopping, bypass the malls, and put some shoe leather on Main Street and some dollars in the cash registers of the small shops located there,” said Candace Daly, Utah state director for the National Federation of Independent Business, a co-sponsor of Small Business Saturday. “Look folks, these are the enterprises that gave most of us our first jobs, the ones willing to take a chance on -- or keep -- an employee whom a big corporation would never consider giving an opportunity to, the enterprises that were the bedrocks during the Great Recession while big businesses produced record layoffs. The money invested in small businesses pays the highest societal dividends: Vibrant communities and jobs for your families and neighbors.”

A survey by NFIB and American Express on prior years’ participation can be read here and expected participation for tomorrow read here. Further comment on Small Business Saturday is available from NFIB/Utah State Director Candace Daly by cell, 801-599-8519, today and tomorrow.

With 350,000 dues-paying members nationwide, including 3,500 in Utah, NFIB is the nation’s largest and leading small-business association. You can follow NFIB/Utah on Twitter, NFIB_UT, or on its webpage, www.nfib.com/utah, where this news release has been posted.

Celebrating its 75th year in 2018, the National Federation of Independent Business has been the Voice of Small Business, taking the message from Main Street to the halls of Congress and all 50 state legislatures. NFIB annually surveys its members on state and federal issues vital to their survival as America's economic engine and biggest creator of jobs. NFIB’s educational mission is to remind policymakers that small businesses are not smaller versions of bigger businesses; they have very different challenges and priorities.

NOVEMER 24, 2017 - CHICAGO, IL - Rising pop artist Matt LeGrand is premiering the video for his cover of Stevie Wonder's "What Christmas Means to Me" exclusively via HuffPost. Watch HERE. "Matt LeGrand takes the song and injects it with his inimitable flair, exuberance and electric voice," HuffPost notes. "With 'What Christmas Means To Me,' [he] establishes his place as a major pop star." The Christmas cover serves as a follow-up to LeGrand's recent single, "All Good", which was released in July to critical acclaim. For as long as he can remember, Matt LeGrand has been in love with music. Spending his infant years in France, LeGrand and his family relocated when he was seven years old to Chicago, where the vibrant city and its influential musicians made an immediate impression on the youngster. Here, he found himself exploring a different genre every night, and diving headfirst into the creation of his own sound.

In 2015, LeGrand released his debut single, "Spring Break Girl", which not only solidified him as a must-watch talent on the Chicago scene, but also a rising star in the national pop world. The coinciding video experienced a meteoric rise, eventually grabbing the attention of tastemakers at MTVU, where it was played on a consistent rotation. The success of the video earned LeGrand a nomination for MTVU's The Freshman video contest; which pits together five emerging artists from all genres and allows the fans to decide who gets on-air rotation.

In the following months, LeGrand released two more soulful urban pop tracks, "Fire" and "One More Try," which landed him on the cover of the November issue of Young Celebrity News Magazine, and led to attention from notable publications like Young Entertainment Magazine, The Student Pocket Guide and Review Fix, who said "Mattʼs emotive vocals meld into the lush groove, heightening the nuanced simplicity that the melody captures."

LeGrand's latest original single, "All Good", was released in July 2017 and garnered praised from HuffPost, AXS, Celeb Mix, Kings of A&R and more. The video is also being played in over 1,300 Footlocker locations this month as part of their pop reel.
