The first official Utah Thanksgiving was observed on Thursday, August 10, 1848 with several hundred people in attendance.  The day’s festivities included singing, dancing and feasting.  The pioneer settlers were grateful to spend the day reflecting on the blessings, freedoms and opportunities they found in their new home.

Thanksgiving Day continues to be a time to celebrate the many blessings we enjoy while surrounded by those we love.  There is a strong tradition of service and gratitude among Utahns. Let us emulate that tradition of service, this Thanksgiving, by sharing our blessings with those in need. Let us also express our deep appreciation for the honorable men and women in uniform who defend our liberty.

On this Thanksgiving Day, as you gather and give thanks for the freedoms and blessings we enjoy, may you also celebrate and strengthen the ties of family and community that continue to make Utah great.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Rob Anderson
