Gov. Herbert takes action on nine bills
SALT LAKE CITY (Feb. 25, 2015) – Gov. Gary R. Herbert has taken action on nine bills today. The governor signed the following bills:
HB01S01 Higher Education Base Budget, Rep. Grover
HB04S01 Business, Economic Development, and Labor Base Budget, Rep. Pitcher
HB05 Retirement and Independent Entities Base Budget, Rep. Powell
HB06S01 Infrastructure and General Government Base Budget, Rep. Froerer
HB07S01 National Guard, Veterans’ Affairs, and Legislative Base Budget, Rep. Sanpei
SB05S01 Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environmental Quality Base Budget, Sen. Hinkins
SB06S01 Executive Offices and Criminal Justice Base Budget, Sen. Thatcher
SB07S01 Social Services Base Budget, Sen. Christensen
In addition, the governor allowed SB1s1, Public Education Base Budget Amendments, to go into law without his signature. The bill cuts the public education budget by two percent and makes a significant shift in policy that would increase the amount of local property tax revenue transferred from school districts to charter schools.
“The governor’s top budget priority is to enact the largest true increase in student spending in 25 years and we have the money to make that happen,” said Marty Carpenter, spokesman for Gov. Herbert. “While the governor understands the need to have a base budget in place, he is unwilling to add his signature to a bill that needlessly cuts education funding and makes a significant policy change that has not been sufficiently debated.”
