My Fellow Utah Republicans,
Last week, a minority of the Utah Republican Party State Central Committee membership, for the second time in three months, called a “Special” SCC Meeting. Both of these special meetings were held at the Entrata headquarters in Lehi.
Despite a strong warning from the Party’s legal counsel, Stewart Peay of Snell & Wilmer, a bylaw was adopted that penalizes any Republican candidate who gathers signatures to obtain ballot access by revoking their Party membership, and possibly removing their name from the ballot altogether. This bylaw clearly violates the UTGOP Constitution, the State of Utah election laws, as well as the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution wherein all are guaranteed “equal protection under the law.”
Resolving this matter is of utmost importance and priority to me at this time. This afternoon, I met with the Utah House Republican Caucus and with Lieutenant Governor, Spencer Cox. I will be meeting with the Utah Senate Republican Caucus tomorrow, and with Governor Gary Herbert on Wednesday. As soon as resolution is reached, I will communicate the outcome to you.
As your Chairman, I am committed to ensuring the Utah Republican Party follows the election laws set forth by the State of Utah, as well as protecting the candidates who have, in good-faith, filed their intent to run for office this 2018 election cycle.
I know this situation is frustrating to many of you (as has been conveyed to me by the significant number of emails and phone calls I have received). My door remains open. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please contact me at your convenience. We will get through this together.
Sincerely,
Rob Anderson
Chairman
