OGDEN  – An Ohio native who relocated to Utah brought with him a piece of the Midwest: Amish hardwood floors.

Matthew Hexter and his family moved to Utah from north-central Ohio, home to the largest Amish population in the U.S.  There, most stores have hitching posts in their parking lots to accommodate the horses and buggies.  “The Amish homes are just as you’d imagine: white clapboard houses, clean laundry drying outside on the clotheslines, neat rows of vegetables in the gardens, and of course, no electricity.  Those images carry over to the dedicated work ethic of their woodworkers,” he said.

Hexter, the exclusive Utah distributor for Valley Flooring of Gambier, Ohio, introduced the beauty of Amish hardwood floors to the Wasatch Front.  Utahns appreciate its premium quality and its many custom features.

“Because the Amish have small, family-run production facilities, each hardwood floor order is made in a small, individual batch.  That allows the flooring to be made to precise standards and the uniqueness of the selected wood to shine through,” Hexter said.

The Amish create hardwood floors the old-fashioned way.  Each plank is hand-cut, hand-planed, and hand-finished according to customer specifications.  Homeowners first choose from eight naturally replenished woods: hickory (hardest), maple, white oak, ash, red oak, walnut, cherry, and elm (softest).  Then they select from among wood collections, colors, widths and lengths, and finishes.  Some homeowners even choose unfinished to later match another wood in their homes, such as cabinetry. All flooring is also available as Engineered, which is perfect for homeowners who want to install a wider width over radiant heating.

Hexter explained, “Whether it’s a new construction or a home renovation, homeowners choose Amish-crafted hardwood flooring for its durability and its “wow” factor.  They love that it can be custom-made to look contemporary or 100 years old.”

Like all hardwood floors, Valley Flooring hardwoods are one of the healthiest floor coverings.  Made from environmentally-friendly woods, they eliminate the toxic off-gassing of synthetic substances.  Hardwood floorings are a hygienic choice because they prevent mold and dust mites.  Finally, Valley Flooring's surfaces are easy to clean and maintain.
