Governor appoints Kent Holmberg to the Third District Court

SALT LAKE CITY (Dec. 29, 2016) – Gov. Gary R. Herbert has appointed Kent Holmberg to fill a judicial vacancy on the Third District Court.

“Kent has an impressive breadth and depth of experience that will serve him well as he takes on this new role,” Gov. Herbert said. “Kent’s commitment to public service is clear. His keen intellect and desire to improve the world around him will make him a fine jurist.”

Holmberg has served as an assistant attorney general for the State of Utah since 2012, including service as a member of the Utah Supreme Court Advisory Committee on the Utah Rules of Civil Procedure. Prior to his service for the state, he was a trial attorney in Salt Lake City for several years. Holmberg was a private practice attorney for nearly two decades in Minnesota, where his practice consisted of the management of legal affairs for business, government and individuals on a wide range of issues, including business and commercial law, governmental liability, constitutional law, contracts and negotiations, estate, tax, probate, and family. Prior to his private practice, Holmberg taught at various Minnesota state colleges and universities on subjects ranging from evidence law to Indian law and trial practice. Holmberg was formerly a certified public accountant.

“I am humbled and honored to accept Gov. Herbert's nomination for Third District Court Judge and look forward to the hearing with the Senate Judiciary Committee. Should I be confirmed, I commit to diligently serve the people of the State of Utah with impartiality and fairness,” Holmberg said.

Subject to confirmation by the Utah Senate, Holmberg will fill the vacancy created by Judge Paul Maughan.
