‘Scooter’s Adventure’ details a curious cat’s adventure

Melissa Rhett-Costa announces publication of new children’s book

VALLEY SPRINGS, Calif. – Based on the true story of an encounter author Melissa Rhett-Costa had with a cat named Scooter, “Scooter’s Adventure” (published by WestBow Press) tells the story of an inquisitive cat, bored of city life, who goes on a long trip.

Scooter the cat dreams of adventure. One day, she gets the chance when the neighborhood is full of cars. Curious, she explores and decides to nap in one couple’s open car with a blanket. While Scooter is asleep, they pack up and return home. As the couple begin unloading, Scooter wakes up, becomes frightened and runs out of the car. After hiding for some time, Scooter inspects her new surroundings and realizes she is far from home. Continuing to wander, Scooter must scavenge for food. Months go by before someone feeds her. Wanting to keep her, the woman who fed Scooter takes her to the vet and discovers she has a chip. After the woman finds out where her owners are, Scooter finally makes her way home back to her good life in the city.

“So many pets get lost during storms, emergencies, etc ... that I think this book helps readers understand the importance of being a responsible pet owner and chipping their pets,” says Rhett-Costa.

About the Author

Melissa Rhett-Costa is a lifelong animal lover. Her first cat, Sam, had many adventures that she wrote about for school projects. Next came her crazy Siamese, Misty Blue. Rhett-Costa has had her adventures as well. She was a park ranger – where she rescued cats – and has been an elementary school teacher for the past 17 years. She has brought home many “dumped” cats from school, one that was “chipped” but the owners moved and left no forwarding address. Rhett-Costa and her husband live in the foothills on 5 acres with their collection of cats. They help out and support APALS, an Amador County animal rescue organization.

HALLOWEEN CANDY BUYBACK-OPERATION GIVE ORGANIZED BY FLAT RATE DOCTORS

Pleasant Grove, Utah – Cash and prizes for kids, candy for our troops

Flat Rate Doctor’s in cooperation with Operation Give is redefining the phrase “put your money where your mouth is.” A few days after this Halloween, trick-or-treaters can bring their excess candy to Smith’s in Pleasant Grove and receive cash and prizes for their candy that will be sent overseas to our troops.

“We are extremely excited for our 2nd annual event. Parents look forward to this almost as much as the trick-or-treating,” says Flat Rate Doctor’s president Kirt Forakis. “Not only is it for a great cause, but it’s fun to dress up one last time and a healthy way for kids to get cash and free prizes and make this Halloween a little easier on their teeth as well.”

Each child who donates will receive: $1 per lb up to 3lbs, healthy goodie bag from Smith's, cookie and ice cream from Chick-Fil-A, day pass from Seven Peaks, smoothie from Roxbury, cheesy bread from Little Caesars, a photo with mascots and troop members from CheapShots Photography and an entry to a giveaway. Parents will receive a free chiropractic adjustment and and free chair massages during the event. The event will be held on November 3rd from 5:30p - 7:30p located at 210 E. 700 S. Pleasant Grove, Utah 84062.

Flat Rate Doctor's is leading this anti-decay movement to get those large amounts of cavity-provoking candy out of the hands of kids and used for a great cause. Global sugar consumption for kids increases by about 2% annually and currently sits at 50 million tons per year, which means parents need to be sure their kids teeth are being cared for more than ever. Candy can lead to hyperactivity and weight gain. In some cases, the wrong types of candy can also lead to broken teeth and damaged braces.

Flat Rate Doctor’s was founded in 2016. Flat Rate Doctor’s makes pricing simple and provides high-quality care with some of the best doctors in the nation. Their phone number is (801) 610-7283. To learn more about Flat Rate Doctor's visit www.FlatRateDoctors.com or see them at 352 E. State Road in Pleasant Grove for free X-rays, CT scans and exams for life.

All candy will be donated to Operation Christmas Stocking an initiative by Operation Give. This is their 13th year of delivering Christmas Stockings to our deployed Troops. 2017 National Summit to Feature
"Real Faces of Education Choice" Session

Mark your calendars for the 2017 National Summit!

The Foundation for Excellence in Education (ExcelinEd) today announced that Chris Stewart, president and CEO of the Wayfinder Foundation, will moderate The Search for Opportunity: Real Faces of Education Choice at the 2017 National Summit on Education Reform on Friday, December 1, in Nashville, Tennessee. ExcelinEd’s flagship event, now in its 10th year, convenes leaders from across the nation and around the world to share strategies to improve the quality of education for each and every child.

Far too many parents across the nation struggle with the reality of sending their children, day after day, to schools that cannot or will not meet their needs. In the general session The Search for Opportunity: Real Faces of Education Choice, parents from Florida, New Jersey, Ohio and Tennessee will share personal stories to remind us why we champion education reforms that create greater opportunity for each and every child.

Governor Jeb Bush will open the National Summit’s content-rich agenda with a keynote address on Thursday, November 30. The National Summit will focus on reform topics of educational opportunity, innovation and accountability in general sessions with nationally renowned speakers, targeted strategy sessions and hands-on workshops featuring policy experts, legislators and educators sharing proven and next generation policy solutions for improving learning for all students.

Each year, the National Summit on Education Reform serves as a strategic convening for leaders who want a timely, comprehensive overview of all elements of transformative education policy. The unique gathering equips them with the knowledge, know-how and a network of experts to champion students in every classroom across America. Last year’s National Summit convened 1,045 education leaders from 47 states, with 94 percent of attendees praising the event as “outstanding” or “above average.”

Visit the National Summit website for speaker information, details on this year’s event and to register. Follow @ExcelinEd on Twitter for the latest news and updates, and use #EIE17 to join the National Summit conversation.
