Local Students Given Opportunity to Study Abroad

Qualified high school students are offered a unique opportunity to spend an academic year, semester or summer holiday in Europe, Asia, North or South America, Australia or South Africa as part of the ASSE International Student Exchange Program.

Students, 15 to 18 years old, qualify on the basis of academic performance, character references and a genuine desire to experience life abroad with a volunteer host family.

Families abroad are carefully screened to provide a caring environment in which students can learn the language and culture of their host country.  Students do not need to know the language of the host country prior to departure but will acquire the language skills through experiencing the day to day culture of their host country.  ASSE students attend regular high school classes along with their new teenage friends.

ASSE is dedicated to promoting closer ties of friendship between the United States and other countries by fostering intercultural understanding through youth exchange programs.

ASSE also provides international opportunities for families to host students from Spain, Mexico, Germany, Great Britain, France, Brazil, Thailand, Japan, and many more.  These carefully screened and selected students are 15 to 18 years old and will attend the local American high school for an academic year.

Students or families interested in learning more about becoming an ASSE exchange student or host family should contact us at 1-800-733-2773 or visit our website at asse.com, host.asse.com or email us asseusawest@asse.com.

ASSE INTERNATIONAL (FORMERLY AMERICAN SCANDINAVIAN STUDENT EXCHANGE) IS A NON-PROFIT, PUBLIC BENEFIT ORGANIZATION. ASSE IS OFFICIALLY DESIGNATED AS AN EXCHANGE VISITOR PROGRAM BY THE U. S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE, WAS FOUNDED BY THE SWEDISH MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, COOPERATES WITH THE CANADIAN PROVIN-CIAL MINISTRIES OF EDUCATION, and the NEW ZEALAND DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.

Holiday weekend saves lives through pet adoptions and donations

Black Friday through Giving Tuesday success at the Humane Society of Utah

The Humane Society of Utah (HSU) announced record-breaking results for pet adoptions during its Fall in Love fee-waived adoption event Black Friday, Nov. 24, through Cyber Monday, Nov. 27, at its adoption center located at 4242 S 300 W in Murray, Utah. A total 338 animals went home over the four-day event, a record 184 on Black Friday alone. Adoption fees were waived for all animals pending approval through the regular adoption process. Over $57,000 in charitable donations were received  on Giving Tuesday, Nov. 28,  making the post-Thanksgiving weekend a success for Utah’s largest nonprofit animal shelter.

“We were astonished to see a line of people waiting outside of our facility Friday morning,” said Deann Shepherd, HSU representative. “By the end of the event, every dog kennel was empty, which has never happened before. It made us tear up with joy to know that so many animals found new loving homes and could enjoy the holiday season with their new families.”

Over the four day period, 158 cats, 155 dogs and 25 other small animals were adopted. Many of the animals had been transferred to HSU from other smaller Utah shelters to give them the chance to find a home during the event.

HSU received over $57,000 during Giving Tuesday, a 24-hour national campaign to fundraise for charity organizations Nov. 28. As an upcoming Hope for the Holidays Telethon sponsor, Mountain America Credit Union sponsored $20,000 of this amount to match online donations from the community.

Adoption fees do not cover the cost of care for shelter animals, and as a local private nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, HSU appreciates donations of any kind.
