The Mobile Phone is the New Mall

Just as online shopping upended the retail world, mobile commerce is now revolutionizing consumer behavior. It’s never been easier or faster to purchase the things we need, like or simply want.

Last Thanksgiving, when early Black Friday sales started kicking off around the country, consumers in the U.S. spent a record $3.7 billion online, with mobile accounting for a full one-third of these sales. That’s more than $1 billion in purchases on their mobile devices — in a single day.

But how exactly are we using our phones for retail therapy, and what types of purchases do we perceive as the most mobile-friendly?

The most popular spending categories on mobile are inexpensive and leisure-based, with one shining exception.

According to Comscore, consumers are more likely to make mobile purchases in “relatively inexpensive” categories, or those that include “lower consideration products.” That means that spare time-centric purchases like video games (49% mobile share of all digital category purchases), toys and hobbies (46%), event tickets (36%), movies and videos (32%), and sports and fitness (31%) occupy five of the top six spots when it comes to mobile purchases’ share of total digital spending in various retail categories. The one exception to this was jewelry and watches, which at 41% of all online purchases coming from mobile was ranked third among the eCommerce categories studied.

More than three-quarters of smartphone users have recently made a purchase on mobile.

That’s right, more than three out of four of us have recently made a purchase with the tap or swipe of a phone screen. Specifically, new research shows that 79% of smartphone users have made a purchase on mobile in the last six months.

Mobile is the holiday shopper’s new best friend.

Gone are the days when many of us stood in line in the freezing cold predawn to elbow our way into a big box store for the best deals on holiday gifts. Now nearly half of us simply tap our phone screen and start crossing off our gift lists from the comfort of home, convenience of work, or literally anywhere we might be at a given time. Over the 2018 holiday season, nearly 40% of all eCommerce purchases were made on a smartphone. Who knew Santa was so high tech?

Amazon is the North Star for mobile spending.

Of course, we all know that the eCommerce behemoth dominates in the online shopping department, but for a large number of consumers looking to purchase something on mobile, Amazon is their first stop and guiding light. Nearly half (49%) of all product searches now begin on Amazon. That’s not to say that Amazon is everyone’s final point of purchase on mobile, but it goes to show the online retailer is much more present in our lives — and on our credit card statements — than any of us probably ever thought.

Shopping on your mobile phone this holiday season? Check out these great deals on devices and plans.

Bishop Delivers Walking Cane to Whip Scalise

Handcrafted by Air Force Colonel (retired)

WASHINGTON – On behalf of retired Air Force Colonel & West Point, UT resident Alfred D. Hawley III, Rep. Rob Bishop (UT-01) delivered a handcrafted cane to United States House Minority Whip Steve Scalise. Together with the hickory cane, Scalise also received a letter from Col. Hawley. (excerpt below)

HIGH RES

Col. Hawley: “I saw you on television walking down a hall using an aluminum cane. Since my retirement from the Air Force and a VA diagnosis of arthritic knees I have become sort of a cane master. I think you should have a cane that is appropriate to your status. Since I have been making canes for myself for a few years I decided to make you a cane you would be proud to carry.

“I looked you up and saw you went to LSU. Since I am a Texas Aggie, I knew that you would be very attached to the LSU tiger. I took a picture of “Mike VI” to an artist friend and he put a tiger on the horn of a hickory cane. I then added some slots for grips and had your name engraved on it and put several coats of tung oil on it. This is a cane you will be proud to carry.”

5 Ways Women Can Celebrate

The Single Life

There’s still a stigma and stereotype attached to being a single woman. Society often equates marriage with success and happiness, and questions why some women remain unattached well into their 20s, 30s, or beyond.

Further, the perception persists that single, childless women are unfulfilled and unhappy. But one report refutes that description, suggesting instead that unmarried women without children are the happiest segment in the population. And in Hollywood, where image is a major factor for actors and actresses, some such as Emma Watson are embracing single womanhood. Watson even coined a new term, “self-partnered.”

Acamea Deadwiler (www.Acameadeadwiler.com), author of Single That: Dispelling the Top 10 Myths of the Single Woman, says it’s past time for society to stop defining single women by their relationship status.

“Single women get unflattering labels and insecurities projected upon them by not just men, but even their female friends,” Deadwiler says. “Being single is not synonymous with lonely or desperate. Being single does not mean that you are broken or bitter or jealous.

“Those assumptions need to be put to rest. Single women can be empowered to refuse being defined by whether or not they have a significant other.”

Deadwiler suggests five ways single women can empower themselves to find fulfillment and happiness and ignore negative perceptions:

  • Pursue a new hobby or interest. “With time to focus on you, expand your experience to include things you like to do, or have always wanted to do,” Deadwiler says. “Perhaps time constraints or self-doubt once held you back, but now you have the room to explore interests outside of work and other relationships. Pursue what makes you happy, what fulfills you, or what piques your curiosity.”

  • Appreciate the good things in your life. While some people view single women negatively or with skepticism, Deadwiler says appreciating all the positives in your life helps block out the outside perception. “Attitude is key when you’re single, starting with how you view yourself,” Deadwiler says. “Focusing on the positives will shift your perspective to gratitude and happiness. Take stock of your family, friends, your job, your health, and your good qualities.”

  • Treat yourself. “You deserve to treat yourself,” Deadwiler says. “Splurge now and then. Take a spa day, get that bag you’ve been eyeing; whatever it is, make yourself a priority for some enjoyment.”

  • Learn to like being alone. “You can’t really know yourself unless you spend time with yourself, independent of the needs and influence of others,” Deadwiler says. “In spending time alone, we get to hear our thoughts without all of the outside noise. We learn our authentic likes and dislikes, what we need, and who we are. This process of self-discovery is invaluable to truly being a happy, single woman.”

  • Prioritize friends and family. “Your time, money, and energy is yours and yours alone,” Deadwiler says. “You get to spend each as you see fit without consulting with anyone else, which makes scheduling time with your friends and family all the easier. And just as you need a good support network, it’s important that you be a strong member of other support networks.”

“When I witness bashing or arrogance as it relates to being single, I don’t get it,” Deadwiler says. “My big annoyance comes mainly with the insinuation that there is something inherently wrong with the circumstance of being a single woman. But a single woman is not a problem to be fixed. It’s a way to get whole, a way to be free and enjoy being the full you.”

New book hopes to spark interest in aviation amidst pilot shortage worldwide

Captain James F “Jim” Vaughan publishes ’Thanks for the Great Flight’

HOOPER, Utah –Captain James F “Jim” Vaughan releases his autobiography “Thanks for the Great Flight” (published by AuthorHouse) hoping to spark interest in the commercial aviation industry as well as to enlighten the public of the worldwide pilot shortage.

The flight instructor gives a sneak peek on the training and preparations that go into obtaining a pilot license. He takes the readers on an actual Airline Transport Pilot check-flight and describes the sensations and maneuvers that all pilots are required to master. Here is an excerpt taken from the book:

I walked over to John, wanting to pass him my small gift I had packed for this occasion. I shook his hand, and congratulated him for a successful first Type Rating up-grade. I offered him a little baggie, containing a pair of four gray- stripe Captain Pilot Epaulets our former Chief Pilot at Zantop, Bob Weir awarded me the day I passed my first Type Rating August 1984.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), there are 633,317 pilots in the United States alone as of 2018. The shortage is due to number of pilots reaching the retirement age of 65, expensive training and difficult FAA requirements. Boeing predicts that airlines will need 790,000 new pilots in the next 20 years. Vaughan hopes that readers are able to gain better understanding of the ins and outs of the aviation industry so that it will ease anxiety for aspiring pilots.

Dear Dave,

I’m 23, debt-free, and I’ve almost got my fully-funded emergency fund in place. I was curious about your thoughts on saving up money to buy a duplex, living on one side, and renting out the other. It would be my first home purchase, and my first rental property.

Derrick

Dear Derrick,

Well, the good news is your renter would be right next door. You can keep an eye on things. The bad news? Your renter would be right next door. It would be a necessity to have very clear boundaries in your relationship. Otherwise, some people will come knocking on your door at midnight expecting you to change a light bulb or something silly like that. The trick to being a good landlord, especially for a rookie, is learning how to balance being firm with people, while still being fair and kind.

Another thing to consider is the purchase of a duplex in general. The upside is you’ve got someone helping pay the bill when it’s rented. The downside is when you get ready to sell a duplex, most of the time your buyer is an investor. This means you’re dealing with a wholesale-minded buyer, and that tends to hold prices on duplexes down more than it would a comparable, traditional, single-family home. On the other hand, the cute, young couple looking to buy a perfectly-staged and freshly painted home is usually more than willing to pay full retail.

I’ve owned several duplexes in my life, but I’ve always done much better with single family homes. They’re easier to rent, they tend to stay rented more consistently, and as a rule, they appreciate faster. Just know your upsides and your downsides if you’re planning on moving into a duplex and doing this. And be very careful about your location. You’ll come out much better mentally, emotionally, and financially in an area where homeowners take pride in their neighborhood!

How to Have Your Happiest Christmas Ever                                     word count: 613

By Chris Hogan

Have you heard the Scripture, “God loves a grumpy giver”? Wait, that can’t be right. It says, “God loves a cheerful giver.” That makes a lot more sense.

I’m sure we’ve all experienced the joy that giving brings, and Christmas is the perfect time to spread joy! During this season, it’s fun to give your money away. If you’ve done it, you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, I dare you to try. You could make an extra donation to your church, or send gifts to families in developing countries. Or, you could be on the lookout for spontaneous ways to give—like leaving a big tip for a server, who’s a single mom struggling to buy Christmas gifts for her kids.

Get this: Generosity is not only fun, it’s healthy! Research shows generous people live longer and are less stressed and depressed than stingy people. One study followed 423 older couples for five years. They found generous couples who helped friends, relatives, and neighbors, reduced their risk of dying during the study period by about one half. Choosing to be a Scrooge could be a health risk!

While writing my most recent book, Everyday Millionaires, I learned that 70% of millionaires set aside money in their budget every month for charitable giving, as opposed to 51% of non-millionaires. But you don’t have to wait to become a millionaire to start giving. These millionaires developed their giving habits long before they had a string of zeroes attached to their net worth. Generosity is a mindset, whether you’re giving $10 or $10,000.

There are plenty of ways to bless people without spending a penny. Here are four ideas:

Share your skills. How can you bless others with your talents? I know a professional photographer who organizes photo shoots around Christmas for families struggling to pay bills. He and his friends give away beautiful portraits those families could never afford to buy.

Share your words. Is there someone in your life who needs encouragement or a thank you? Send a text, write a note, or pull them aside in person. Their face will light up brighter than a Christmas tree!

Share your time. Intentionally plan out your time with family so it doesn’t get lost in the Christmas chaos. You could also spend time with people who are lonely during the holidays. Visit nursing homes or prisons, or find people who are celebrating the holidays away from home and invite them over.

Share your possessions. Maybe you can’t buy someone a new bike, but you could let them borrow yours. Or you could donate some of your clothes, furniture, or toys to a family in need. Sharing your home is a great way to give, too! Open it up to friends and neighbors.

The joy of giving will outlast the shiny toys you open Christmas morning. But I want you to think of generosity as a new way of life, not just a seasonal mindset. What kind of legacy do you want to leave? How do you want to be remembered? You can measure material things in dollars, but impacting someone’s life in a positive way is priceless!

How Connecting Children

To Nature Is Good For Both

Plenty of older Americans hold fond childhood memories of climbing trees, catching frogs, and engaging in endless hours of tag or hide-and-seek with friends.

Most children today, though, spend much less time outdoors, with their recreational hours instead devoted to TV, video games and computers, a trend that has nature advocates concerned.

“If they don’t feel a connection to nature, they aren’t going to feel it’s important,” says Clyde Butcher (www.clydebutcher.com), a nature photographer who since the 1980s has helped bring national awareness to the Everglades through stunning black-and-white photographs that have been compared to the works of Ansel Adams.

“The question is, how do we get them to make that connection. The answer is that the responsibility lies with you and me. I think it’s important to educate both kids and grownups about the world’s environmental wonders.”

Advocacy groups are trying to do just that.

The National Wildlife Federation, for example, has a Green Hour program designed to encourage parents, grandparents, schools, and others to adopt a goal of an hour per day for children to play and learn outdoors in nature.

Butcher says that he tries to bring nature to people through his photography in the hopes they will be inspired to experience it for themselves.

“My goal is for them to say, ‘Wow, I want to go there. I want to see the real thing,’ ” he says.

Introducing children to the great outdoors is about more than just building extraordinary memories. Butcher and other nature proponents say benefits include:

Time outdoors can equal happiness. “Nature is one of those things that can really bring your spirits up,” Butcher says. Indeed, studies show that spending time outdoors is good for your mental health, and those who manage to do so are generally happier than those who stay cooped up inside. Butcher does his part to try to put people in touch with nature. Just recently, his gallery in the Big Cypress Swamp in south Florida sponsored a fall festival that included guided swamp-walk tours for children and adults alike. Those swamp walks provide what Butcher thinks of as education by immersion.

Time outdoors makes children healthier. A sedentary lifestyle can lead to children being overweight, which in turn increases their risk for a number of diseases, such as asthma and diabetes. When children spend time outdoors, they are almost certain to get more exercise, reducing those risks. Health professionals also say that, while over exposure to the sun can be harmful, some time absorbing the sun’s rays is helpful in such ways as boosting your body’s vitamin D.

Time outdoors makes children better stewards of the earth. It’s important to protect the environment, and to preserve natural wonders for future generations, but it’s difficult to truly appreciate nature without venturing out into it, Butcher says. Children who take the time to explore what nature has to offer, he says, are more likely to become advocates for protecting it.

“Sometimes, in the abstract, it’s difficult to understand why nature is so important,” Butcher says. “But when children step into it, and see it firsthand, they can fall in love with it. Then they begin to understand.”

About Clyde Butcher

Clyde Butcher (www.clydebutcher.com) is an acclaimed nature photographer who is best known for his striking black-and-white images of the Everglades in Florida. But he has photographed the beauty of nature in other locations as well. For more than 50 years, he has been preserving on film the untouched areas of the landscape. Butcher has been honored by the state of Florida with the Artist Hall of Fame Award. Other major awards and honors include the Lifetime Achievement Award from the North American Nature Photography Association; Humanitarian of the Year for 2005 from the International University; the 2011 Distinguished Artist Award from the Florida House in Washington, D.C.; and the Ansel Adams Conservation Award from the Sierra Club.

NEWS RELEASE

For immediate release: 26th November 2019

Mobile data to drive New Zealand telecom market through 2024, says GlobalData

Favorable regulatory environment and growing demand for mobile data is expected to drive the telecommunications market in New Zealand between 2019 and 2024, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Sree Venkatesh, Senior Analyst in Telecoms Market Data & Intelligence at GlobalData, says: “Fueled by growing popularity for smartphones, Internet of Things (IoT), machine-to-machine communications (M2M) and 4G technologies, New Zealand telecommunications market will continue to witness growth in the mobile data category during the outlook period.”

According to GlobalData’s New Zealand Mobile Broadband Forecast Pack, mobile data revenue is set to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 8% between 2019 and 2024.

The mobile Internet subscription penetration is expected to witness a CAGR of over 7% during the same period, driven by increasing smartphone subscriptions. Against this back drop, the total smartphone subscriptions in New Zealand are expected to reach six million in 2024.

Venkatesh adds: “Competition among the communication service providers (CSPs) has been increasing in New Zealand due to the entrance of new mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) in recent months, mobile number portability option and less number of carrier-locked handsets.”

For instance, Kogan Mobile has partnered with Vodafone to launch prepaid mobile services in September 2019. As a result, CSPs are working on reducing the customer churn rate by introducing competitive mobile plans.

Venkatesh concludes: “The New Zealand telecom regulator is closely monitoring the competitive landscape, customer engagement and impact of the entry of new MVNOs in to the market.  Therefore, the telecommunications market in New Zealand is expected to witness growth during the forecast period powered by pro-active approach of the regulator. ”

NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE ANNOUNCES ENCORE MOMENTS CAMPAIGN WINNERS

-Over 50 Everyday Heroes Rewarded with a Cruise for Two-

MIAMI (Nov. 25, 2019) – Norwegian Cruise Line, the innovator in global cruise travel with a nearly 53-year history of breaking boundaries, today announced the winners of its Encore Moments campaign, created to recognize and reward everyday heroes across the U.S. and Canada for the positive impact they have on their friends, families and communities.

Fifty-one nominees were chosen for their outstanding, and often selfless, efforts. The below winners will enjoy a three-to-five-day cruise for two as well as a weekend in New York City, where they will be celebrated at an award ceremony aboard Norwegian Bliss, one of the most innovative ships in the Company’s 17-ship fleet.

“We are excited to honor these inspiring individuals from around the U.S. and Canada,” said Andy Stuart, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line. “Their kindness, dedication and passion to help others is truly moving.  From first responders, to those helping family members in need, to those who go out of their way to lift others up, we are happy to acknowledge these heroes through our Encore Moments campaign.”

The Encore Moments Campaign is just one in a series of efforts that showcases the Company’s commitment to awarding individuals who are dedicated to spreading acts of kindness. In May, Norwegian Cruise Line honored 30 teachers as part of its Giving Joy campaign, and in September, the Company rewarded 20 music educators on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”
