Dear KidsOutAndAbout.com readers:

"Remember that time," I said casually to my daughters, several summers ago, "when we made this awesome fort in the backyard out of branches and leaves and leftover cardboard from boxes? And then we sat in there and ate lunch?"

They stared at me over their peanut butter sandwiches, bewildered. We were, at that very moment, sitting in the fort we had just finished making out of branches and leaves and leftover cardboard. Then Madison's confusion turned to understanding. "Oh," she said, "I get it. You want us to remember this."

"Right now, and always," I said. "This is summer."

Here at KidsOutAndAbout.com, we do our best to take the stress out of finding great opportunities to create summer memories with your family by giving you a jam-packed calendar and wonderful summer fun lists

The key, of course, is to find a way of preserving the memories you make. The best way I've ever seen a family do it is that each day, they tried to take a photo or two, even if just of their trip to the grocery store. And then just before bedtime, their wind-down activity was to view the photos on the computer to remind everyone what they'd done, and each child then used some markers or crayons to draw their own picture of the activity. My friend then three-hole punched each drawing and stored it in a binder. At the end of the summer, they had about 120 drawings from the two kids; that easy-to-store heirloom has become one of the kids' most precious possessions from their childhood.

Have you found other ways to preserve your family's summer memories? Let me know. I live for this kind of thing.
