STATEMENT in response to Rep. Ryan Zinke’s nomination advancing to Senate floor

DENVER—In response to today’s vote by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee recommending Rep. Ryan Zinke be confirmed as the next Secretary of the Interior, the Center for Western Priorities released the following statement from Executive Director Jennifer Rokala:

“Congressman Zinke has big shoes to fill if he wants to follow in the footsteps of Teddy Roosevelt. The first week of the Trump administration has shown Zinke will have to stand up against the firehose of nonsensical executive orders coming out of the White House if he wants to be a leader in the West.

“New polling released today shows an overwhelming majority of Westerners are opposed to selling out our public lands to oil and gas companies at the expense of access for hunters, anglers, and hikers. They prioritize renewable energy and the outdoor economy. They want an infrastructure package that improves our national parks, and they’re vehemently against giving states control over national public lands. As a member of the Trump cabinet, Westerners are relying on Congressman Zinke to be their voice of reason amidst the chaos in Washington, DC.”

AFP-UT Slams Lawmakers’ Costly, Bloated Financial Projections

Utah lawmakers could shut down thriving “mommy blogger” business with internet sales tax

SALT LAKE CITY – Americans for Prosperity-Utah is calling into question the supposed $200 million that some elected officials are saying the state might “lose” from not collecting sales tax on online purchases.

“Of the 100 top Internet retailers in the United States, only 17 companies are not already charging sales tax on purchases made in Utah,” said state director, Evelyn Everton. “The $200 million number is vastly overinflated considering that most online retailers are already complying with tax laws. Lawmakers should understand what the real numbers are before costing Utahns tax dollars in costly litigation and putting our jobs at risk.”

“In other states, that have passed an affiliate marketing nexus, companies have cancelled those contracts in order to avoid compliance. Utah has 10,000 'mommy bloggers' who are affiliate marketers and could face losing their livelihoods. Those states that have passed an economic nexus, are tied up in litigation. Utah is considering a bill that would do both.”
