Hello,

Fact: The need for blood doesn’t pause for the holidays. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, more than 1 million units of blood could be transfused in the United States.

Despite this constant need, busy holiday schedules make it difficult for the American Red Cross to collect enough blood to meet those patient needs. Donors of all blood types, especially type O, are urgently needed.

In thanks for being the lifeline patients need this holiday season, the Red Cross is thanking those who come to give now through Dec. 18 with a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email, courtesy of Suburban Propane.

Below is more information about why donors are needed now along with upcoming blood donation opportunities in the community. Please let me know if you have any questions, would like to set up an interview or need additional information. Thanks in advance for your support!

Sincerely,

Cynthia De La Torre

Need for blood doesn’t stop for holidays – donors needed

Those who come to give through Dec. 18 will receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. (Dec. 2, 2019) — Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, more than 1 million units of blood could be transfused in the United States. Individuals are urged to give a lifesaving gift this holiday season by making an appointment to donate blood and help the American Red Cross ensure a sufficient supply is available for patients throughout the holiday season. Those with type O blood are especially needed.

How blood donation impacts lives

On Sept. 28, 2018, MaKenzie Schienebeck experienced a complication during her pregnancy and found herself losing blood extremely fast. She was in and out of consciousness and felt her life slipping away. Schienebeck was given blood transfusions on the way to the hospital, during emergency surgery and after surgery. “I would not be alive today if it was not for the American Red Cross and the gracious donors who gave their blood,” said Schienebeck. “Blood is more than just blood. It’s the key to saving lives.”

During the holiday season, set aside an hour to give blood and be the lifeline patients need. Make an appointment now by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

In thanks for helping meet the urgent need, those who come to give blood now through Dec. 18 will receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email, courtesy of Suburban Propane. (Restrictions apply; see amazon.com/gc-legal. More information and details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/Thanks.)

Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.

Volunteers needed

Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross is to become a volunteer transportation specialist and deliver lifesaving blood products to local area hospitals. Volunteer transportation specialists play a very important role in ensuring an ample blood supply for patients in need by transporting blood and blood products. For more information and to apply for a volunteer transportation specialist position, visit rdcrss.org/driver.

 ==================

How to donate blood

How To Plan For Healthcare Costs

That Could Derail Your Retirement

People work for decades with a hopeful eye toward retirement. But while many try to envision their retirement years as a blissful time of fun and relaxation, no one has a crystal ball showing exactly what all the expenses will look like.

This is especially true of health care.

Fidelity’s annual Retiree Health Care Cost Estimate projected that a 65-year-old couple retiring in 2019 could expect $285,000 in health care and medical expenses during their retirement. An Edward Jones survey showed many Americans are concerned about health care expenses in retirement, particularly baby boomers.

“People spend their healthy years accumulating all their wealth,” says Michael Macke (www.petrosplanning.com), vice president and co-owner of Petros Financial Group. “They work hard and save, building their nest egg.

“But when you retire, you wind up spending a lot of your wealth on your health. In talking with people about retirement for 25 years, health care is always their top concern. To most people it’s the great unknown that can derail the best-laid plans. You never know when you’re going to get sick or come down with a disease.  What kind of care will be required, and most of all, what is it going to cost?”

How do you plan for that great unknown — health care costs in retirement? Macke offers these tips:

Make extra wiggle room for the “what-if” medical expenses. “When planning a long-term budget, most people just look at their baseline monthly expenses, but it’s wise to have a discussion about how health care costs can fit in during retirement,” Macke says. “Budgeting for a potential additional expense of $350 to $500 per month in the future can help you be better prepared to handle that ‘what-if’ scenario.”

Open a Health Savings Account (HSA). An HSA offers tax advantages such as deductible contributions and tax-free withdrawals for qualified medical expenses. “The funds from your HSA can be used to pay for Medicare premiums and long-term care insurance premiums,” Macke says. “Those who are 55 or older can make a catch-up contribution of $1,000 a year in addition to the maximum contribution limit (which is $3,500 annually for individual coverage and $7,000 for family coverage).”

Manage Medicare annually. “Every year, you should be reviewing Medicare plans. You need to figure out which plan is best for you based on your health as well as what’s covered and what isn’t in each option.” Macke says. “Some plans may cost a little more but would save you on doctor’s visits and co-pays. Also, remember that your part B and D premiums could be higher based on your annual income from two years prior. Make sure you are working with a tax planner and retirement planner to manage your income, which may include distributions from retirement accounts. Being aware of these limits could save you money! Your health changes constantly as do your options for Medicare coverage. Make sure you are evaluating each year.”

Pay attention to your health. Sounds simple, but a healthy lifestyle is the best way to reduce the chance of health complications and costly bills in retirement. “Don’t miss annual checkups with both your doctor and dentist,” Macke says. “Adhere to a reasonable diet and fitness regimen. And don’t discount the dentist. Cardiovascular disease shows up in the gums first.”

“Unexpected medical expenses later in life threaten our physical health and our financial health,” Macke says. “Therefore, it’s vital to be proactive and plan as early as possible in order to protect your retirement you’ve worked so hard for.”

Impeachment: Dump Trump or dump Democrats

Impeachment. Yay or nay. What do you say?

House Democrats are conducting an official inquiry into allegations that President Donald Trump pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden.

Impeachment and U.S. Presidents. “While only three previous presidents faced serious threat of removal, one out of four confronted formal accusations in the House,” according to a 2019 article in The New York Times.

President Bill Clinton was impeached by the House but acquitted after Senate trials. Is the current chaos a form of liberal revenge for the past sex scandal in the Oval Office?

President Richard Nixon resigned before the full House could vote on impeachment. Does the Trump “Smear Gate” even compare to Watergate? Or is it a worse offense?

“The House has initiated impeachment proceedings more than 60 times but less than a third have led to full impeachments. Just eight—all federal judges—have been convicted and removed from office by the Senate. Outside of the 15 federal judges impeached by the House, two Presidents (Andrew Johnson in 1868 and William Jefferson (Bill) Clinton in 1998), a cabinet secretary (William Belknap in 1876), and a U.S. Senator (William Blount of Tennessee in 1797) have also been impeached.” www.history.house.gov.

“The President, Vice President and all Civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.”— U.S. Constitution, Article II, section 4. www.history.house.gov.

Do politicians cry wolf when they don’t get their way? “Indeed, I don’t like this or that, so I will cry impeachment!”

How many hands in Washington D.C. are clean? “But my hands are somewhat cleaner than your dirty hands!” Step forth politician without sin and throw the first stone.

We teach children that character matters. Yet, a leader with character defects and disturbing behaviors (i.e., lying, cheating, stealing, spying) is not necessarily mentally ill. A leader that lacks altruism, empathy for humanity, and kindness is not necessarily mentally ill. America has elected a leader that does not fit the norm—that doesn’t mean he is mentally ill. Trump is narcissistic, disrespectful to females, discriminating against minorities, and a billionaire that misuses his power. His impulsive tongue and emotional reactions are what lands him in hot water, along with his twitter tantrums. He probably missed the lesson on how to agree to disagree with tact (i.e., diplomacy, sensitivity, thoughtfulness) in grade school.

The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump is a 2017 book. More than 27 psychiatrists, psychologists, and mental health experts offered their consensus view that Trump's mental state presents a clear and present danger to our nation and individual well-being.

The 2017 rebuttal book is called Twilight of American Sanity: A Psychiatrist Analyzes the Age of Trump. “Calling Trump crazy allows us to avoid confronting the craziness in our society—if we want to get sane, we must first gain insight about ourselves. Simply put: Trump isn’t crazy, but our society is,” declares the author.

Both the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association have policies stating it’s unethical to diagnose public figures from afar.

I didn’t vote for Donald or Hillary. I am not in cahoots with Republicans or Democrats. I belong to the Disillusioned Party.

Impeachment. Yay or nay. What do you say?
