UNITED STATES FLAG RETIREMENT CEREMONY TO KICK OFF THE 2017 WEBER COUNTY FAIR

Community members can have their flag destroyed through referent burning ceremony

OGDEN, UT (August 4, 2017) –On August 9th, a flag retirement ceremony will take place at the Golden Spike Event Center as a kick-off to the Weber County Fair. The flag retirement ceremony will take place at the Golden Spike Event Center Outdoor Stadium August 9th at 5pm. Community members are encouraged to bring their soiled, torn, or faded flags to the Outdoor Stadium approximately fifteen minutes before the ceremony begins.

“The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning”, as stated in the United States Flag Code. The ceremony will open with a posting of colors by the Honor Guard, and conducted by community members John and Connie Ott. The Ogden City Fire Department will control the fires from the ceremony. A chaplain will lead the invocation and prayer before the burying of ashes at the George A. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home.

“The retirement of our countries flag is a very sacred and important process. Many members of our community have flags that need to be retired, yet do not know the correct process. We are excited to offer this service to our community, and thought what better way to kick off our County Fair than with a ceremony that ultimately gives praise to the county we live in,” said Jan Wilson, Special Events Manager of the Weber County Fair.

As beings who live upon the surface of Earth, we often overlook the tremendous importance of our oceanic ecosystems. But, did you know that over 1 billion people rely on the oceans as their primary source of food? Did you know that over 1/3 of the Great Barrier Reef died in 22016 alone? Due to the fact that the ocean absorbs the vast majority of heat in our atmosphere, it serves as a harsh warning to all life on Earth about the dangers of rising global temperatures. I urge everyone to watch the documentary Chasing Coral to learn more about the dissappearance of our reefs and to READ MORE to learn more about easy steps we can take to help curb this truly devastating environmental catastrophy.
