A very special exhibit will be on display in the Airborne & Special Operations Museum's temporary exhibit hall, now through July. "Before They Were Airborne: The 82d Division in World War I", is a unique look at the history of the 82d on the division's 100th anniversary.

In addition, Alvin York's uniform that he received from the Tennessee Volunteer Service, making him an honorary Colonel after his discharge, is also on display. This is the first time these two uniforms have been available for the public to view.

Numerous original World War I propaganda posters are also on display plus a trench periscope, numerous service badges, and a gas mask. The gas mask is on loan from the descendants of PFC Zigmund Staskiel.

Some of the artifacts displayed include a uniform worn by Capt. Henry Lee Jewett Williams, the first 82d Soldier killed in action June 9, 1918.

All other artifacts on loan from the 82d Airborne Division War memorial Museum collection (www.82ndairbornedivisionmuseum.com).

=======================

First, we are releasing our 9th Utah Women Stats research snapshot today titled “Unpaid Care Work Among Utah Women,” with co-author Robbyn T. Scribner. We are grateful to the Utah Women’s Giving Circle for their grant to help fund the research behind this snapshot. I hope you will find this informative and interesting. See this and other briefs and snapshots here

Second, for those interested in conversations about childcare, we have two resources to provide. Erin Jemison (Director of Public Policy, YWCA Utah) and I hosted a luncheon with ten child care experts in the state of Utah. From the discussion we have created the document, “Strategies to Strengthen Women's Impact in Utah: Childcare” (see list of experts in the document). Also, we have compiled the links to published reports on childcare in Utah through the years, and you can access that list here. Reports are available on other topics as well.

Third, I would like to highlight a few of our community partners that do wonderful work in the community for girls and women:

  • The new Women’s Influence Center is located in the St. George Area Chamber of Commerce offices and is offering monthly educational and networking events. For more information call 435-628-1658 or email wominfluence.stg@gmail.com.
  • The Women’s Business Center (Salt Lake Chamber) is a nonprofit statewide organization that helps Utah women build confidence, create opportunities, and experience success in business ownership.
  • Utah 2-1-1 provides people with ways to get help and give help. We thank the United Way of Salt Lake, the United Way of Utah County, and others around the state for their great work in providing this resource.
  • The Women’s Success Center at Utah Valley University is one of our strategic partners; they focus on motivating and assisting more Utah women (of all ages) to attend college and complete degrees.  They teach that degrees can transform lives for women and families in Utah.

Finally, we have added more programs to our programs/camps for Utah girls/young women (K-12) here (third section down). Also, there are lots of women’s events in Utah during June, so check those out. These events are hosted by over 100 women’s groups and networks across the state from business, community, higher education, online, political, professional, and student chapters. Summer is a good time to take a few minutes to nominate yourself or another women for government boards, commissions, and committees. See the appendix of this brief for direct links to each of the Utah boards and commissions.

Enjoy your summer!
