Principal’s Corner Happy New Year! This is a time of year for reflection and resolutions. By Thursday, January 8th, we will be half way through our school year.

This time of year is a good time to celebrate the learning and growth your child has experienced so far this year. It is also a good time to do a student success check with the following questions:

1-How is my child’s school work? Do you ask your child questions about what he/she is learning in each specific subject? Do you check the MyWeber portal for grades and other information? Do you go over homework with your child?

2-How is your communication with your child’s teacher? If your child is struggling do you get in touch with the teacher for ideas to help your child at home?

3-How is my child’s attendance? Do they get to school on time? Are they staying at school all day? The more students are in school, the higher their achievement because they do not miss crucial instruction and get behind academically.

4-Do I reward my child’s efforts at school? Do I praise my child on a daily basis? The best way to motivate further effort is to notice it, specifically praise it, and reward it.

5-How involved are you with the school? We welcome any volunteers at our school. We are still in need of reading volunteers and our PTA can always use help.

Beyond the classroom doors, the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the positive involvement of parents.

SAFETY Thank you for continuing to support our parking lot procedures. Students are getting in and out of cars much quicker to keep the cars moving. Please do not park in the red zones as it affects the flow of the pick-up line.

From the Nurse January is a long month with short days of sunlight. It’s cold outside, and for most of us, we spend a lot of time in front of the screen. This includes watching TV, playing video games, using the computer, tablet, or smartphone. Too much screen time may increase our chances of becoming overweight, decrease school performance, and interfere with relationships with family and friends.

How much is too much screen time?

If you are spending more than 14 hours per week (2 hours per day), you are spending too much time in front of a screen.

What can we do when we turn off the electronics?

 Play in the snow (ski, snow shoe, build a snowman)

 Pick a great book to read

 Create something (crafts, art, jewelry making, etc.)

 Put a large puzzle together with the family

 Learn to dance

 Try a new hobby

 Learn to cook (choose a healthy recipe to try while you are at it)

 Organize your room or closet.

Challenge yourself to reduce the amount of time on your electronics and to try something new. Challenge your friends and family to do the same. The opportunities are endless! Have a Happy and Healthy New Year!
