Some people get up at night with thoughts weighed on their soul, but among them are those that do not let struggle define their life. A. David Barnes, MD. PhD, MPH FACOG pens an edifying memoir of an English boy who had conflicts within himself, but had worked his way up and recovered from his failures in life.

Edifying and captivating, the book describes the life of an English boy towards the German Blitz of London, whose dream of becoming a doctor was unattainable at the beginning. Being a traveler, Barnes does not only reveal intimate personal details, but also he discloses interesting historical references. Growing up from the modest neighborhood of London, he divulges his provoking opinions on the British educational system that could be model for the USA; compares life as a gunner with his privileged position as an officer in the British Army serving in England and the Far East; and tells how pioneer family practice in the wild areas of Canada; and obstetrics-gynecology professorial roles extending from Okinawa through Hawaii to Florida.

 “Working Hunger” Epidemic Engulfs 147,394 Utahns;

New National Report Details Utahns and Other Americans Employed but Food Insecure

10.5 percent of Working Utahns Struggle against Hunger;

Minimum Wage Hikes Decrease Hunger

Approximately 10.5 percent of Utah working adults suffered from food insecurity in the years 2014 to 2016, according to a new report by Hunger Free America based on an analysis of federal data. In other words, with a state minimum wage at $7.25 an hour– a poverty wage – one in 10 hungry Utah residents worked but still struggled against hunger. The report also found that, nationwide, increased state minimum wages correlated with declined hunger among working people.

Said, Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America, “While unemployment decreased and wages rose during the last few years of the Obama Administration, the United States still faced an epidemic of the ‘working hungry.’ This shameful data is the latest evidence that the American dream is seriously at risk unless we change our current economic and political policies nationwide. Low wages are still the top cause of U.S. hunger and malnutrition. The good news is this data proves that states that hiked their own minimum wages were less likely to have workers struggling against hunger.”

Hunger Free America’s analysis of federal data also determined:

  • Fully 41 million Americans – including 13 million American children – struggled against hunger nationwide. About 15 million, equaling 10.3% of American working adults lived in households that couldn’t afford an adequate supply of food.

  • Approximately 34.5% of food insecure Americans are employed adults. This is approximately 4.7% of the entire US Population.

  • In states with a Minimum Wage of $10 or above, 9.3% of the population was working hungry, compared to 10.3% in the states at $7.25 or below.

  • The states with the highest rates of food insecurity among working adults were New Mexico (15.3%), Mississippi (14.0%), Louisiana (14.0%), Arkansas (13.5%) and Maine (12.9%).

  • California leads the nation in the highest numbers of food-insecure working adults at 1.8 million, followed by Texas (1.4 million), Florida (902,150), New York (841,625), and Ohio (594,635).

  • Nearly 5.5 million, or one in 12, Americans over 60 are facing food insecurity.

  • The federal government spent nearly $91.3 billion on nutrition assistance programs for children, seniors, and adults in the 2016 Fiscal Year. The top ten states receiving the largest federal anti-hunger spending per capita, are New Mexico, Louisiana, Hawaii, Mississippi, Georgia, Alaska, West Virginia, Alabama, South Carolina, and Florida.

Berg continued, “Disproving the stereotype that federal food benefit recipients are mostly in ‘inner cities’ or blue states, the states most reliant on this aid are Southern, highly Republican, states, often because their wages are so low. For instance, in Utah alone, where the state minimum wage is only $7.25 per hour, federal nutrition aid equals $430 per year for every resident of the state. This provides the latest evidence that it would be both hard-hearted and economically counter-productive for Congress to further slash these programs.”

The study, “Working America’s Still Hungry” National Hunger Report is available on Hunger Free America’s website, www.HungerFreeAmerica.org, through which anyone can also donate or volunteer, or find food if they need it.

Judicial Watch: New Justice Department Records Show Strong Support by Mueller Deputy Andrew Weissmann, Other Top DOJ Officials for Yates’ Refusal to Enforce President Trump Travel Ban

‘I am so proud. And in awe. Thank you so much. All my deepest respects’ – Andrew Weissmann, then-Chief of Justice Department Criminal Fraud Section

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch today released two productions (335 pages and 44 pages) of Justice Department (DOJ) documents showing strong support by top DOJ officials for former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates’ refusal to enforce President Trump’s Middle East travel ban executive order. In one email, Andrew Weissmann, one of Robert Mueller’s top prosecutors and formerly the Obama-era Chief of the Justice Department’s Criminal Fraud Section, applauds Yates writing: “I am so proud. And in awe. Thank you so much. All my deepest respects.”

Judicial Watch obtained the documents through a May 2017 Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit filed after the Justice Department failed to respond to a February FOIA request seeking Yates’ emails from her government account (Judicial Watch v. U.S. Department of Justice (No. 1:17-cv-00832)) for the time period she served as Acting Attorney General for President Trump.

The emails, several sent from official Justice Department email addresses, show strong support for Yates, who was fired for disobeying a direct order from the President:

  • Thomas Delahanty, then the United States Attorney for Maine wrote: “You are my hero.”
  • Liz Aloi, a career service employee and Chief of the Justice Department’s Special Financial Investigations Unit told Yates she was “Inspirational and heroic.”
  • Emily Gray Rice, then the U.S. Attorney for New Hampshire and an Obama appointee said: “AAG Yates, thank you, as always, for making us proud. It is truly an honor to work for you.”
  • Obama appointee Barbara McQuade, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan told Yates, “Thank you for your courage and leadership. This is wonderful news.”
  • DOJ Civil Division Appellate Attorney Jeffrey Clair wrote: “Thank you AG Yates. I’ve been in civil/appellate for 30 years and have never seen an administration with such contempt for democratic values and the rule of law. The President’s order is an unconstitutional embarrassment and I applaud you for taking a principled stand against defending it.”

“This is an astonishing and disturbing find. Andrew Weisman, a key prosecutor on Robert Mueller’s team, praised Obama DOJ holdover Sally Yates after she lawlessly thwarted President Trump,” stated Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton. “How much more evidence do we need that the Mueller operation has been irredeemably compromised by anti-Trump partisans? Shut it down.”

Yates was appointed by President Obama as U.S. Attorney in northern Georgia and was later confirmed as Deputy Attorney General. In January 2017 she became acting Attorney General for President Trump.

Yates was involved in the controversy concerning Gen. Michael Flynn, allegedly warning the Trump White House in early January about General Flynn’s contacts with the Russian ambassador, Sergei Kislyak.  (Judicial Watch is separately suing for records concerning the surveillance and subsequent leaks regarding General Flynn.)

On January 30, Yates ordered the Justice Department not to defend President Trump’s January 27 executive order seeking a travel ban from seven Middle Eastern countries. That same day, President Trump fired her for refusing to defend the action.

In a late October article describing Andrew Weissmann as Robert Mueller’s “Pit Bull,” The New York Times wrote, “He is a top lieutenant to Robert S. Mueller III on the special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible links to the Trump campaign. Significantly, Mr. Weissmann is an expert in converting defendants into collaborators — with either tactical brilliance or overzealousness, depending on one’s perspective.” Weissman oversaw the pre-dawn home of former Trump aide Paul Manafort in what one former federal prosecutor described as “textbook Weissmann terrorism.”
