Fremont High School

Monday, April 7, 2014 - 9:30am

Fremont's Girls Basketball team played in a national tournament in NYC.  The girls won their first game, then lost a tough one in the championship.  Congrats, girls, on the great season.  You've made FHS proud.

Fremont High School’s Danze Company headed off to competitions on the 21st and 22nd of March. They  performed three different types of dances: Contemporary, Jazz, Hip Hop.

“Danze company is a group of hard working girls that put everything they have into their dancing,” stated head dance coach Deanne Thorpe. “I feel that as long as we can keep the energy level up and the facials [expressions] big we can definitely achieve [a] platinum [award]. They will have to perform a perfect routine on all three dances, they will have to dance with energy, show excellent showmanship, and have all the choreography clean.”

The girls on Danze Company are having an awesome year. However, they have all had their fair share of injuries throughout the team. “With me hurting my hand and not being able to put pressure on it, it keeps me from being able to do a lot of the choreography that we have,” said Morgan Lefler, Danze company’s captain. “However, I can’t thank the team enough for how willing they were to change the choreography around to make sure that I still got to be in the dances.”

Danze Company came out victorious with all three dances winning high gold. This is a score that averages at 95 for all three judges.

If you see any of the Danze Co. performers in the halls, make sure to congratulate them!

When many people hear of track, they imagine a sport where kids who cannot make any other team do track. The reason being that no one is cut from the team as long as he or she regularly attends practices and meets. That is not the case as many would falsely assume.

Every participant of the track team works extremely hard every day, giving their all to earn a top position in their desired event. New personal bests are broken almost every day due to the drive and determination displayed by these incredible athletes.

Returning Senior Spencer Boltz has a lot of faith in this year’s team. “We have a really strong group of kids this year, and if we can come together there’s no doubt in my mind that we can’t have a successful season.”

The most interesting fact of all is that track is rather unique when compared to other sports. While scoring points and winning is attributed to the combined points of everyone on the team, the actual process in which athletes gain points depends on the individual competing in their specified event. This not only creates a determination to win for the team, but they are also constantly trying to better themselves in order to score points.  “I like the fact that each week I’m not only helping the team, but I’m bettering myself as well.”  Senior, team captain Austin Bowles said.

At their most recent meet, our Fremont girls placed 3rd overall and our boys placed 5th overall. In addition to these impressive finishes in this meet, Fremont had 3 athletes qualify for state. Jessica Quayle qualified in the girls high jump, Whitney Fowers and Chelsea Grange both qualified in the girls javelin, and Brooke Lamb qualified in the girls discuss.

These athletes, along with all the other competitors, deserve a recognition of excellence.

The season has started incredibly well for this team and only appears to be improving.

As Fremont’s baseball season gets under way, it’s clear the team is going to have a successful season.  With returning players such as Taylor Kranendonk, Tanner Wade, and Garrett Himelright, along with others who are strong components of the team, it’s clear the team is going to be heavy with talent this year.  “I’m excited for what we have the potential to accomplish this year.”  Senior pitcher Taylor Kranendonk said before heading out to a practice.

The team recently ventured to St. George for a tournament, where they won 2 out of the 4 games they played in. The following week the team came out strong but regrettably fell to the Layton Lancers.

While every team searches for improvement throughout the season, senior Tanner Wade felt that fielding errors were their most pressing matter to attend to.

However, when asked if he thinks the baseball team is going to have a successful season, a confident “Oh yeah” was all Tanner Wade felt was needed to be said as he comfortably relaxed in his chair. If a seasoned veteran believes in the team, then the student body definitely should.

Another season is ready to go for Fremont High’s soccer team. Every player is determined to play for the chance to become state champion.

The team is better than last year. They have grown and stepped up to play better. New players have joined to make Fremont’s soccer more competitive. “All freshmen and sophomores are great. The team is strong,” says varsity starter, Braydon Christensen.

The preseason was a downfall for the players, as they had a rough start, although they look to improve and get better each time.

As we look into finding those important players out in the field, here are some that are always doing their job as asked by the coaches. Names like Gunner Burrell, Alec Ferrin, and Tayden Gibson. “Alec Ferrin is one of the players that can lead the team,” says Christensen.

During practices the players look to improve by working together as a team and getting stronger. A lot of their practice is based on touches and finishing, to improve their passes with minimum mistakes and improving their shot on goal. “If we play well, we will be  with high scores every game, depends on how well we play,” says Christensen.

Looking to the JV soccer team there has been a lack of confidence at the start of the season, but on the other hand, the team is in great shape. Players that have been outstanding during each game are Brody Loftus, Austin Towns, and Austin Freeman. At practice they also work a lot to improve. “Possession and talking is what is worked on,  to build confidence,” says Brody Loftus JV defender.

For the JV team, their main focus on the season is to improve their game, and also trust. The team is much better compared to last years. They have improved many positions on the field. They have improved the Flat 4 line up in defense, and the Diamond shape in Midfield.

Good luck to Fremont’s soccer team this season.
