Lee Calls For State Approval Of Monument Designations
WASHINGTON – Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) spoke from the Senate floor Tuesday calling on Congress to reform how presidents designate federal land as a national monument.
“For far too long federal land-management agencies have given the people of Utah – and the people all across America – little reason to trust in the federal government,” Lee said. “My amendment gives us an opportunity to change that.”
Sen. Lee’s proposed amendment to the Energy Policy Modernization Act would amend the 1906 Antiquities Act in a way that would preserve the president authority to designate federal lands as national monuments. However, if within three years of the president’s designation, the state in which the monument was designated has not passed a resolution ratifying the designation, the national monument designation would expire.
