November 9th, 2017 - St. Louis, Missouri - Story of the Year is giving fans another dose of new music with the premiere of "I Swear I'm Okay" with Billboard today! The track mixes the catchy lyrics and hooks that fans have come to expect from Story of the Year with the addition of 80's synth that blend together seamlessly for a truly special track. Singer Dan Marsala shares "There's definitely something special about 'I Swear I'm Okay'.  As soon as Ryan sent the demo over, ideas just started pouring out.  I sat down to record some vocal ideas and the first thing that came out of my mouth was the line, 'I Swear I'm Okay.'  It's something that people say, to hide the fact that things aren't truly okay.  A mask that you wear when you don't want to be honest with others or yourself.  This song means that and so much more to me and it's one of my proudest moments on the record." On the track, Billboard shares "'I Swear I'm Okay' sports the same adrenalized hooks that fans have come to expect from Story of the Year, deftly blending clean vocals and cathartic screams in the song's climactic final chorus. But the band also expands their sonic palette with vintage synthesizers and electric drums, successfully transitioning the sound and fury of their past into the modern alternative rock arena."

 

The single comes from upcoming album Wolves, due out December 8th, 2017. Produced by Aaron Sprinkle (Anberlin, New Found Glory, Acceptance) and mixed by Tom Lord-Alge & J Hall, their first full-length album since 2010 is a testament of how inspired and committed they are to making their best record yet. The upcoming album is full of depth as the band continues down a supercharged anthemic road of alternative rock/hard rock songs while remaining consistent to their classic Story of the Year soaring sound. Recently, Story of the Year premiered "Bang Bang" exclusively with Alternative Press, who called the track a "sure-fire crowd-pleaser"and continued on by saying "it's the perfect way of reminding fans why they fell in love with the band in the first place."

HRC Scores Utah Companies’ LGBTQ-Inclusive Workplace Policies in New Corporate Equality Index

 

WASHINGTON - Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, announced a record number of the nation’s major companies and law firms are advancing vital policies and practices to protect LGBTQ workers around the world, according to the 2018 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), an annual report assessing LGBTQ inclusion in major companies and law firms across the nation, including four in Utah.

This year, a record-breaking 609 businesses earned the CEI’s top score of 100, up from 517 last year -- a single-year increase of 18 percent. This record sets a new high water mark for corporate leadership over the 15-year history of the CEI.

In total, 947 companies and law firms were officially rated in the new CEI, up from 887 in last year’s. The report also unofficially rated 137 Fortune 500 companies, which have yet to respond to an invitation to participate in the CEI survey assessing their LGBTQ policies and practices. The average score for companies and law firms based in Utah is 75 percent. Of the four companies ranked, one earned 90 points and above, and two earned 80 points and above.

“At a time when the rights of LGBTQ people are under attack by the Trump-Pence Administration and state legislatures across the country, hundreds of top American companies are driving progress toward equality in the workplace,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “The top-scoring companies on this year’s CEI are not only establishing policies that affirm and include employees here in the United States, they are applying these policies to their operations around the globe and impacting millions of people beyond our shores. In addition, many of these companies have also become vocal advocates for equality in the public square, including the dozens that have signed on to amicus briefs in vital Supreme Court cases and the 106 corporate supporters of the Equality Act. We are proud to have developed so many strong partnerships with corporate allies who see LGBTQ equality as a crucial issue for our country and for their businesses.”

Key national findings revealed in the 2018 CEI:

  • 609 companies earned a perfect 100 points, up from 517 in the 2017 report;
  • Gender identity is now part of non-discrimination policies at 83 percent of Fortune 500 companies, up from just 3 percent in 2002;
  •  459 major employers have adopted supportive inclusion guidelines for transgender workers who are transitioning;
  • 137 Fortune 500 companies were given unofficial scores based on publicly available information.

The CEI rates companies and top law firms on detailed criteria falling under five broad categories:

  • Non-discrimination policies
  • Employment benefits
  • Demonstrated organizational competency and accountability around LGBTQ diversity and inclusion
  • Public commitment to LGBTQ equality
  • Responsible citizenship

Inside Judicial Watch: The Forgotten Soldier — a Fort Hood Survivor’s Tragic Story

 

 

November 3, 2017 - 18:55 - In the latest edition of "Inside Judicial Watch," Carter Clews sat down with Staff Attorney Lauren Burke to discuss an important case involving a Fort Hood massacre victim, Sergeant Joshua Berry.

On November 5, 2009, U.S. Army Major Nidal Hasan opened fire at Fort Hood, Texas, killing thirteen people and injuring more than 30 servicemembers and civilians. Sgt. Berry was among the servicemembers injured in the attack.

Following the massacre, the secretary of defense declined to recognize the mass shooting as an international terrorist attack against the United States. Instead, the attack was characterized as “workplace violence.” As a result, active duty servicemembers injured in the attack were ineligible for the Purple Heart, among other awards and benefits.

Berry, a veteran of the Afghanistan War, who sufferer from PTSD, took his own life in February 2013. His father, Howard Berry, is fighting alongside Judicial Watch to correct the record and allow his son to be posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
