STATEMENT on Emerging Interior Department Pattern of Ignoring Public Input

DENVER—As Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke arrives in Utah, and following Saturday’s rally with thousands of supporters of Bears Ears National Monument on the steps of the Utah state capitol, the Center for Western Priorities released this statement from Deputy Director Greg Zimmerman:

“In the past 24 hours, we learned Secretary Zinke has denied meeting requests from both the Escalante Chamber of Commerce and key Utah tribal leaders, making it clear he intends for his visit to Utah to be a one-sided affair, ignoring input from local stakeholders who support national monuments at Bears Ears and Grand Staircase–Escalante.

“This news comes as administration is mothballing Resource Advisory Councils, the primary venue for BLM to receive feedback directly from local stakeholders. Cancelling these meetings while holding a one-sided listening tour across Utah sends a clear signal that Secretary Zinke intends to make decisions behind closed doors and not through an open and transparent public process.”

By contrast, when then-Interior Secretary Sally Jewell visited Bears Ears last summer, she listened to all sides of the monument debate, attending numerous listening sessions and public meetings over four days. Thirty Native American tribes have expressed support for Bears Ears National Monument, along with the National Congress of American Indians, representing some 300 sovereign tribal nations. Locally, six of the seven Navajo chapter houses in Utah also passed resolutions of support.

The Trump administration paid lip service to public input when it announced a public comment period on national monuments with the “Friday trash,” quietly adding Maine’s Katahdin Woods and Waters and Oregon’s Cascade–Siskiyou to the official list of monuments being targeted for an illegal elimination or modification. Zimmerman added:

“If President Trump and Secretary Zinke take their fingers out of their ears and actually listen, they will learn that the public is overwhelmingly supportive of America’s national monuments, and any attempt to shrink or eliminate even a single monument will be met with outrage.”

PRESS RELEASE: San Juan County Commissioners Welcome Secretary Zinke for Tour of Proposed Bears Ears Monument

San Juan County, UT – From Monday, May 8th through Tuesday, May 9th, the San Juan County Commissioners are honored to be hosting Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke as he tours the proposed Bears Ears National Monuments and meets with local citizens.

The San Juan County commissioners will be advocating for the rescinding of the proposed Bears Ears National Monument. "A monument of this size would devastate the economy of San Juan County,” said San Juan County Commissioner Phil Lyman, “healthy economies require diversification- locking up 1.3 million square acres of land shuts down our ability to build an economy outside of the narrow tourism months.”

Rebecca Benally, a San Juan County Commissioner and a member of the Navajo Nation stated her concern saying, “These lands have been wonderfully protected and watched over by the local population for generations. The last minute, grotesquely large designation from President Obama to place control of these lands in the hands of un-elected bureaucrats a thousand miles away is an insult to our people.”

San Juan County Commissioner Bruce Adams responded to the supporters of the monument stating, “Many large out of state groups and Washington DC bureaucrats advocating for the monument and have made numerous empty promises of increased land access and use. However, history shows that lands designated as monuments are dotted with more “Area Closed” signs than ever before. These empty promises ring of hollowness and their history is not comforting to the people of San Juan.”

Celebrating National Charter Schools Week 2017

The Theme is Freedom

Freedom is the fundamental, uniting principle of the American experiment. Freedom—to choose, to innovate, and to determine and pursue excellence—independent of tradition and convention, as individuals, families and communities is at the heart of what it means to be an American.

Some such pursuits spawned the charter school movement and elevated educational choice to its current state as an invaluable good and an essential component of public education. Choice, flexibility, innovation and freedom—elements with manifest results in the success of charter schools—can continue to pave the way for opportunity and excellence. Gone are the days when a school in a community would be limited by distance and cost from availing its students of every imaginable lesson that exists in the world to enhance their learning. First and foremost, it requires listening to the students and directing their educational experience in totally new ways – and then talking about it!

To continue to achieve however requires an understanding of the inevitable roadblocks that will rise to challenge progress. Advocates for true opportunity must engage with school leaders and communities at every level to support freedom, flexibility and innovation in the face of bureaucracy. Many more American youth are in need of the opportunity that educational options like charter schools can deliver to them, and our work is far from finished. In the face of the opposition to change, we can continue to expand freedom to choose and increase opportunity for all if we keep fighting the fight. Congratulations to charter schools and your communities on another year of progress and success!

For our final email celebrating National Charter Schools Week, we're featuring videos from charter schools where freedom and flexibility have allowed the arts to come alive; selected from video submissions to CER’s Hey John Oliver, Back Off My Charter School!” Video Contest held last Fall.

GET INVOLVED. For the movement to grow and meet the demand of parents in need of education alternatives, it’s essential to showcase the hard work charter school leaders and educators are doing day in and day out. Help celebrate #CharterSchoolsWeek by signing and sharing the pledge to support public charter schools!

Founded in 1993, the Center for Education Reform aims to expand educational opportunities that lead to improved economic outcomes for all Americans — particularly our youth — ensuring that conditions are ripe for innovation, freedom and flexibility throughout U.S. education.
