Capturing 30 Antelope Island bighorn sheep for release in central Utah

What: Sheep will be soaring above Antelope Island the first week of January. That’s when biologists from the DWR and State Parks will work with a helicopter crew to capture 30 Rocky Mountain bighorn rams. The helicopter will bring the sheep to a staging area, where they will all receive health checkups and vaccinations. Some of the animals will also be fitted with tracking collars. At that point, they will be loaded onto trailers for their ride down to the mountains east of Oak City. The sheep will be released there to supplement a population in central Utah

Accompany enthusiastic birders on annual count

What: Whether they spot a partridge in a pear tree or seven swans-a-swimming, avid birders will take detailed notes during this year’s Christmas Bird Count. Volunteers of all ages will head outdoors between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5 to document the numbers and species of birds they see. This annual event began in 1900 and has become the longest-running citizen science effort in the world. A DWR biologist will participate in these counts during the upcoming weeks.
