Fremont’s drama class will be performing the Pulitzer Prize winning play The Crucible by Arthur Miller in April. The cast will include 30 performers as well as 15 student technicians. The play centers on the Salem Witch Trials and the fear and paranoia that was associated with the trials. Mrs. Aubrey Obray, who teaches the class, says The Crucible is one of her favorite plays because, “it is beautifully written and I love the depth of character and the journey that this whole community takes together. I love the old-style yet contemporary way in which the dialogue is constructed. And I think there is much to relate to in the story and characters for the actors themselves and for audiences. It's truly a classic.”
Mrs. Obray says it’s been a few years since the last time Fremont performed a play of this magnitude. “It really does take a special group of students who are self-disciplined to be able to do a play like The Crucible,” she said. “It is a lot work. It takes much research, collaboration, many hours of rehearsals and a little bit of themselves to pull off a good production. You have to be somewhat vulnerable to be an actor, because who you are is your biggest tool.” Most importantly, though, Mrs. Obray wants her students to enjoy their time acting. “I hope that they [the students] look back on their experience in a production and can say that the experience helped influence who they are and their perspective on the world. I hope they make wonderful friendships and really feel the sizzle/energy/spark of having a magnificent experience on the stage.”
Dates for the play are April 24t, 25t, 26t and 28 at 7 pm in the Fremont auditorium (1900 North 4700 West Plain City). Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students.
