In September, I went in for my annual check up. As I’m aging, it becomes

necessary to check blood pressure, cholesterol, and have a few minutes to

visit with my doctor about my health.

Parent teacher conferences are bi-annual check up with your child’s

teacher. It is a time talk about academic subjects, social skills, and emotional

development. You, the teacher, and your child together are a team---

working together. Here are a few ideas to consider as you plan your parent

teacher conference visit:

1-Before the conference, ask your child how he/she feels about school

progress and peer relationships.

2-Discuss with the teacher how your child is progressing. Ask questions like: Is

my child performing at grade level? How is she or she doing compared to the

rest of the class? What do you see has his or her strengths? How could he or

she improve?

3-Ask to see examples of your child’s work. Ask how the teacher gives grades.

4-Be sure to share your thoughts about your child. It often helps the teacher if

you know your child learns a certain way. Share with the teacher any

changes goingon in your family that may affect your child.

5-Ask the teacher what you can do at home to help your child learn.

6-Make a plan with the teacher and your child of the things you will all do to

continue providing a great learning experience both at home and at school.

7-Praise your child for the success he or she is making and continue to work

with him or her in the areas of needed improvement.

When parent and teachers join forces, they form a powerful alliance. As allies,

parents and teachers have the same shared goal---student success.

While parent teacher conferences are only formally scheduled twice a year,

remember you can make an appointment with your child’s teacher at any

other time to discuss progress.
