Opening Session: UEA President Sharon Gallagher-Fishbaugh opens the UEA Convention followed by a keynote presentation from newly elected NEA President Lily Eskelsen García. The 1989 Utah Teacher of the Year began her career as a school lunch lady before earning her degree and teaching in the Granite School District. <Media availability for Sharon and Lily following the session>

Education Policy Panel Discussion: Hear how federal, state and local education policies impact classrooms and student learning. Panel members include:

ABOUT THE UEA CONVENTION—
The UEA has been providing teacher training at its annual Convention for more than 100 years, but in 2012 added activities for kids, parents and anyone interested in public education.
Available activities at the Convention include:
· An interactive learning area with hands-on activities for kids provided by KUED, Discovery Gateway, Thanksgiving Point, Mad Science, Salt Lake City and County Libraries, and more (including lesson plans for teachers and parents).
· Stage presentations and workshops where educators, parents and students can learn how to help struggling learners, where to find free learning resources, how use magic and attention-getters in teaching, and more.
· A book giveaway where participants shoot a hoop and win a free book.
· An extensive selection of training opportunities for professional educators.
· An exhibit hall with more than 100 vendor booths showcasing education-related products and services.
· Speakers addressing important education topics.
· A meet-the-candidates event.
· The annual Superstars in Education banquet where 10 teachers will be presented with Excellence in Teaching awards.

Admission to the UEA Convention & Education Exposition is free for UEA members and their families. General admission is $10. Free tickets are available from public school teachers.
